BRUSSELS, Belgium - One hundred journalists and other news media workers died on the job in the first six months of the year, putting 2007 on the path to becoming the deadliest year for the news business, the International News Safety Institute said Friday.

Iraq has been the most dangerous country for journalists in recent years, and the group said the 100-mark was reached with a death there Tuesday — the killing of Hamed Sarha, a 30-year veteran of the Iraqi national news agency by unidentified gunmen.

According to statistics compiled by the Brussels-based group, 83 journalists and 17 other media professionals died around the globe covering news stories between Jan. 1 and June 26, with 72 of them slain.

Once again, the press makes themselves the story. Funny, there was no mention of how many American Patriots that were killed or injured. Go figure.

Thank you for civilized and thoughtful comments.

This thread is an example of how low FR has sunk. Sounds more and more like DU.

No mention of how many American Patriots have been killed because of one sided reporting, either.....

"...unless they truly are working with the enemy..."

In my mind, there is a lot of leeway for interpretation in that conditional statement.

My first thought was not that FR sounds like DU in this thread.

My first thought was that FR sounds nearly universally what our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan say about the media when I have had the opportunity to speak with them personally.

The difference is that the military personnel are much more professional and restrained in their oratory, but the tone of their voice, the looks in their eyes and their facial expressions betray their anger, puzzlement and sadness.

While I do not advocate the infliction of physical harm on members of the media in general, the media deserves every ounce of excoriation that is heaped on it by people who care about what happens to this country.

That last condition de facto removes the media from that category of people.

You could always gather your own news.

I pretty much do.

At least on one particular event that has been lied about, twisted and distorted by th media for a few years now.

Well said. I don't wish harm on them, but I wish they'd stop using their access as a platform to promote their agenda.

Case in point at Yahoo on a "news" item today:

U.S. raids Baghdad slum; 26 Iraqis die (Article by...Hamid Ahmed...gee...who is HE?)

Here is an excerpt:

"At about 4 a.m., a big American convoy with tanks came and began to open fire on houses — bombing them," said Basheer Ahmed, who lives in Sadr City's Habibiya district. "What did we do? We didn't even retaliate — there was no resistance."

This article is completely slanted...the insinuation and accusation that we just sent tanks in...unprovoked and began blowing holes in the walls of the houses of innocent, impoverished Iraqis as their children slept in their beds. Sure, they have the US spokesmen saying it was a legitimate firefight and so on, but one can be an uneducated dunce and figure out instantly what is being said in this article.

Actually that not true. 100 Leftist Propagandists have been killed. We have very very very few “Journalists” left any more.

It’s a report. A starting point. Are you going to discount it or move on and look for other reports on the incident?

Journalism seems to be a self-anointed state these days. Anyone roaming around a hot spot can claim to be a journalist, a stringer,or to be “working on a story”. You get more people wandering around in armed conflicts and they get shot up.

It’s always nice to see you show up. Sort of like a faaat in an elevator. How anyone takes seriously anything you have to say boggles my feeble mind.

And it's so typical of what the media has done all along here.

The troops are saying there WAS quite a lot of resistance. It was a genuine firefight and some Mahdi Army scum got wasted (which is excellent news to me.) There's more good to this, but I'd better not say it right now.

So, let's see...who do I believe? the troops or the media...troops...media....gosh what a difficult (not) decision. ;-)

"FR souonds more and more like DU".

You really don't understand the concept of black humor, do you.

It helps people vent and carry on when news is tragic, disasterous or frightening. This natural instinct is as old as mankind.

Uptight, holier-than-thou people don't like black humor one bit.
