In many ways, this family of five is like many others in West Michigan.
They go to church. They pay taxes. The oldest daughter does well in school and dreams of college.
But with Thursday's collapse of an immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate, the parents continue to fear a knock on the door that could split this family in two.
They broke immigration law a decade ago when they crossed the Mexican border and could be deported if found out. Their three daughters are citizens because they were born in America.
``All it would take is one phone call and you are gone,'' said the father, Ignacio, 45, who spoke in Spanish through an interpreter and asked that his real name not be revealed.
``I live very fearfully, watch everything I do, all out of fear of being deported.''
The bill defeated Thursday, which was backed by President Bush, would have offered a complex path to citizenship for many of the 12 million people who reside in the United States illegally.

The same with my Japanese daughter-in-law. First she came on a student visa, not knowing anyone or speaking English. In three years, she earned a degree while studying English and worked. She graduated (with no help from our government) from a university with a degree and spoke fluent English. When she finished her degree, she felt honor bound to obey the visa laws here, and went back to Japan.
They wouldn’t live in fear if they lived where they wer legal.
You get a social security number. You file a tax return. Uncle Sam keeps the dough. That’s how.
He ought just get pissed and leave.
Agree.......every time the word immigrant is used in this debate with others, I correct them and call them by their proper name.....illegals.
Real immigrants don’t need amnesty.......
Congratulations to you. I know someone that is really pissed about this crap along with her family from Brazil. They are not stupid and own a lot of things. I learned Portugese and when those women get mad, it’s time to hide.
Sure, they’re living in fear that people will find out they’re not Americans, but in ten years time they can’t learn the language and try to pass.
He’s been here ten years and he can’t speak English? I’m going to call Bullchit on that one.
where i live many americans live in fear of violence by illegals,
not to mention their famous dui’s.
>> You get a social security number. You file a tax return. Uncle Sam keeps the dough. Thats how.
Pray tell, if you’re an illegal alien, HOW do you “get a social security number”?
Steal it?
The executive branch is in charge of enforcing our immigration laws. I feel more and more betrayed by President Bush.
In many ways, Charles Manson is quite charming too.
Let's talk about the bottom line. What counts.
They are illegal and in no position to demand anything.
Next story...
“Immigrants still living in fear”
“No, they are not. “
They are living in Michigan, amongst other places.
“Just the other day, I heard on the local radio that the ICE was releasing felons who had completed their sentences back into society instead of deporting them, as Federal laws demand.”
Commiting the crimes that Americans wont do anymore?
He has been here over 10 years? Why didnt he go after amnesty the first time?”
The last big amnesty was in 1986.
OTOH, he *DID* do the anchor baby thing. Give him 8 more years and he’ll get the anchor baby track to legalization.
Yeah.
Bank robbers don't have anchor children. At least not many...
Congratulations to both of you. We can already see that you are great assets to your new country.
Mahalo
Do you know how far his SS check goes down there?
We should all retire there
I was reading that they were still giving amnesty thru 2000. “Late amnesty”
” I would like to see the Republicans in Congress push a bill to set up an immigration Hot Line. Call a number to turn in an illegal.”
The Govt wont do it so private citizens will:

why, after ten years, does he still need an interpreter?
