Mexicans Chide U.S. Over Immigration
The Associated Press ^ | June 29, 2007 | LISA J. ADAMS

Posted on 06/29/2007 3:25:14 PM PDT by Baladas

MEXICO CITY -- Opinion makers and migrant advocates in Mexico said Friday that the collapse of U.S. immigration reform plans hurts Mexican workers, U.S. employers and anti-terrorism efforts.

President Bush's plan to legalize as many as 12 million unlawful immigrants from around the world while fortifying the border collapsed in the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

"This is very bad news for Mexican migrants in the U.S.," said Jorge Bustamante, special rapporteur to the U.N. human rights commission for migrants. "It means the continuation and probably a worsening of the migrants' vulnerable conditions."

The Rev. Luis Kendziersky, director of a shelter for migrants in the border city of Tijuana, said it appeared senators "are focused more on the political game than on the real needs of the people."

"According to polls, the majority of the people (in the U.S.) want legality with concessions for undocumented migrants, but the radicals make a lot of noise," he said.

An editorial in the national daily newspaper El Universal said, "It's obvious that the politicians of that country want laborers, but they are not willing to legalize the labor that they need."

Migrants "will continue to be subjected to extraordinary means of discrimination," El Universal said. A "subculture of illegality" in border crossings also does nothing to aid the U.S. fight against terrorism, it said.

An editorial in the left-leaning newspaper La Jornada called the decision a "triple shipwreck" _ a failure for the Bush administration, the United States and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

"The most powerful country on the planet will have to continue living, for many more months, with the scandalous contradiction between its laws and the real needs of its economy, thirsty for cheap labor to guarantee the international competitiveness of its exports, especially in agriculture."

They're already rewriting history after one day? From an"estimated 12 to 15 millon immigrants" to "as many as 12 million immigrants"?

Time to "chide" Mexico for its immigration policies and for the simple fact the country sucks.

"It means the continuation and probably a worsening of the migrants' vulnerable conditions."

Oh, such conditions these "migrants" must endure! -- free education, free medical, and the best paying jobs they've ever had in their lives.

First off if this comes from the UN, then I don’t give a rat’s patootie. In fact, I’m even more happy.

Second the migrant conditions are Mexico’s problem, not America’s and I’m tired of paying for those problems.

Third, anybody named Bustamonte can go straight to hell.
I was fed up with the other one

Absurd. They need to look at their own border laws which are far stricter than ours and look at their own human rights record which is far worse than ours. We already house 1/10th of their population who are responsable for sending back huge amounts of cash and have a president who kowtows to them and yet they expect more. Ungrateful little buggers.

I agree. It’s just awful what we did yesterday. If I were a Mexican, I’d pack up and leave in protest.

The real needs of “the people”??? My concerns ARE for the needs of the people... the people of THIS country first...

Let’s look at the immigration laws of Mexico:

Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country. This ban applies, among other things, to participation in demonstrations and the expression of opinions in public about domestic politics.

Equal employment rights are denied to immigrants, even legal ones, even those with green cards.

Only citizens may serve in the military as officers, on airline crews , and chiefs of seaports and airports.

Members of both houses of Congress as well as the Supreme Court must be a citizen by birth.

Immigrants — even legal ones — may not become members of the clergy.

Foreigners, legal or illegal, may not own land.

Any citizen may arrest illegal immigrants and their accomplices, turning them over without delay to the nearest authorities.

Foreigners, legal or otherwise, may be expelled for any reason and without due process.

and Mexico is chiding US?
The hypocrisy of the Mexican government is laughable.

If these people are to be allowed in this country for “compassionate” reasons, then what are those reasons?

Either Mexico has to start making the internal reforms that make their own country sufficiently attractive that the native population does not consider fleeing the land of their birth their only viable alternative, or the conditions of oppression within Mexico should be widely publicized and made known for what they are.

The Mexican power establishment does not know shame, nor do they own up to their own very real lapses in judgment.
