McCain introduces talk radio legislation

Arizona Sen. John McCain has introduced federal legislation to protect talk radio shows from the reinstatement of past rules that required dissenting voices be given equal time on their shows.

McCain and fellow GOP Senators John Thune of South Dakota and Norm Coleman of Minnesota have put forward legislation preventing the reinstatement of the 'Fairness Doctrine'.

The Fairness Doctrine was done away with in 1987 but previously required political radio shows to offer equal time to opposing viewpoints as part of their Federal Communications Commission licenses.

A number of Democrats and liberal advocates want the Fairness Doctrine put back in place. They do not like the fact talk radio is dominated by conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and Laura Ingraham.

McCain said imposing such rules would stifle free speech and there are plenty of political viewpoints in the marketplace.

Conservative radio talkers have criticized McCain for his stance in favor of immigration reform.

“Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
In my mind and in my car, we can’t rewind we’ve gone to far
Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh “

Like the Buggles McCain was wrong and he can’t rewind he’s gone too far.

Obviously McCain is desperate, he's turning away from the NYT and WaPo and trying to impress conservatives.

He finished next to last at Annapolis. He dithed his plane in Hanoi and gets called a war hero. I’d say he has already vastly exceeded expectations.

Since when is Juan McCain for free speech and the First Amendment?

I do hope a “Fairness Doctrine” bill is introduced in the Senate, though. I want to see Hillary Clinton vote on this issue. It will make for great campaign ads when she votes against free speech.

Good. It's about time he takes a stand for America. I swear this man is all over the place...he's got some major psycho problems.

To bad his admiral Daddy didn't let the navy complete his deprogramming when he returned from his POW days. We Americans wouldn't have to be enduring crazy mccain...

McCain-Feingold? Tear it up, SCOTUS.

I’d like to see non-voice vote on this too. My guess would be HIllary’d miss that vote, Barack would say he wanted to stop “hate crimes” and vote for it

I would look at the language of this bill very carefully. McCain is still one of the most opportunistic pols I've seen in a long long time...He puts his finger up to the wind, finds an issue then hides a secret agenda or pork in Section 54366(b) on page 783 of the supplement.

He's as dirty as they come and dangerous.

Didn’t McCain recently promise that the US will NEVER build a fence or barricades at the border?
