For the past few months, Sen. Chuck Hagel, Republican of Nebraska, has flirted with the idea of running for president as an antiwar Republican. Now, however, that platform is threatening Hagels standing within his own state and party.
In a race that has received scant national attention, Jon Bruning, Nebraskas 38-year-old Republican attorney general, is challenging Hagels bid for re-election to the Senate--by attacking him from the right. Bruning charges that Hagels stance on Iraq, as well as his criticism of the president and members of his cabinet (see: Alberto Gonzales), put the incumbent out of touch with the majority of Nebraskans.
Nebraska is more conservative than the nation as a whole, Bruning told NEWSWEEK. Senator Hagel, however, has become more liberal. And for some reason he has an anger to George Bush that is not particularly productive.
How substantive a threat does Bruning pose? No reliable independent sounding has yet been taken. According to a poll recently commissioned by Brunings office, he finds himself 9 percentage points ahead of Hagel in a head-to-head contest.

I'd love to see someone else run in his place.
W did more that support Amnesty. He DROVE the issue. Even Reid and Pelosi are doing what they can to help W here because the issue is a GIANT LIABILITY for Republicans going into an election year.
Not MINUTES passed after the last attempt at I.R. was thwarted that Pelosi was out blaming R’s for the existing situation.
When the time comes let us know how to donate to Bruning’s campaign.
Am I wrong or did not the president have some some strong comments about the people who were against amnesty, along with mesures Lott , Gramn and McCain. Wasn’t the racist tag thrown around? Seems like they were more than willing to throw us under the bus, but that’s just me.
That's not going to be very relevant, given that President Bush will be leaving office shortly after the new Congress convenes. In fact, it may just help Hagel at the polls. "I work well with Bush" and "my opponent doesn't get along with Bush" aren't going to give any campaign oomph in 2008.
I agree. I sent a lot of private replies to some of the most offensive ones trying to explain it was the Kennedy/McCain bill. Then Harry Reid changed it to the President’s bill. Bush just wanted an immigration bill (I did not agree with it either and did all the calls and messages to everyone I could think of to defeat the bill). The return offensive comments were even more offensive than the ones they posted. I was surprised to see that a lot of them were long time members of FR. Someone had a tag line quoting Thomas Jefferson “if you train the mind and do not teach morals you have created a menus to society”
What point: that I dislike Bush: SURE, but that it is undeserved: I would like to submit that most here don’t think so!
Comments or opinions? yeah, how can I send a contribution to Bruning?

The great part about states like Nebraska is that the media markets are not expensive (Omaha, Lincoln, Scottsbluff, etc) and every dollar contributed goes a lot further.
I by no means condone blatant disrespect of the President - but darn do I feel let down for all the support I’ve given over the years.
What good is it for us to bash the Presedent now? In 18 months he is an exPotus. Wasting time blasting him my make us feel better but itonly helps the RATS?

I thought Bob Kerry was a college president. Why would he want to get back into politics? He had a pretty safe seat when he left.
I agree as long as he doesn’t pull another boner like the last one. He needs to just continue with the war on terror and go quietly into the night.
“Senate Republicans, even ones that we would think would not do so, will end up in Nebraska campaigning for Hagel.”
Those who do campaign for this leftist idiot who calls himself a Republican need to be put on the dump list with Hagel.
What Bush & Co. tried to do to us and our beloved Country, wipes out and frankly taints all the tough talk rhetoric we've heard for years and years from the man. He wants to protect us by fighting the enemy over there, yet strangely doesn't want to protect our borders?!
He's the one who should be apologizing to us, Ishabibble.
You will not find a bigger Bush supporter than I WAS on this forum. But I'm not blind either, and I refuse to let blind admiration for a politician get in the way of me fighting for and protecting The United States of America; you know that country Bush swore to protect and defend?
Many Nebraskans like the Democrat Ben Nelson as a better conservative than Hagel. I bet Hagel gets thrown out. Hagel’s style of Republicanism may fly in Maine, but not Nebraska.
