DUBYA'S END
BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW
June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.
It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.
(snip)
He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.
(snip)
And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

but I can't defend him anymore....and I won't....
he has spent our money like a drunken sailor and instead of using the power of his presidency and a majority in both houses to fix SS he instead got one thing thru that will make it worse...that *%$#^&*$^& prescription drug giveaway......
Reagan got a lot done and he did not have any majority IIRC....
I never liked Bush SR and thought he was a "One world govt" type and I was right and his son Dubya is no better, maybe worse....
sorry Jed...you might be the best of the bunch after your mom but I can't support anymore of your family.
ISN'T IT IRONIC THAT WE HAVE GROWN TO DISRESPECT DUBYA FOR THE EXACT OPPISITE REASONS THAT THE RATS HAVE....
good god that’s funny
Someone yesterday said Bush went beyond 'lame duck' all the way to 'dead duck'.
But he'll never admit that he should be enforcing our immigration laws instead of ignoring them to suit his cronies.
Hey, Koolaid Johnny comes up for air!
That’s quite a beating you, Dubya, and Ted Kennedy took yesterday from the American people. I’ll bet it left bruises.
You are out of your mind ... I never said that
Though I’m not surprised by your post
Maybe if you weren’t busy race-baiting he wouldn’t have been able to pin that tail on you.
‘bray’ing is what donkeys do, no?
I believe I had one post deleted for daring to say your mob hates Mexicans as much as they hate President Bush, Rudy and McCain. I guess that qualifies for racism round here. Nobody argued the McCain, Rudy or President Bush part only the Mexicans.
Course everyone knows that the mob only wants to throw Mexicans back to their Turd World existance out of love. Also, they have shares in a NY Bridge you can invest in.
Guess if you really want to be insulted you can always find a way. You may want to call Ripley’s and see if you can get the World’s Thinnest Skin record??

And let's not forget the Dubai ports fiasco.
The 2006 Act was signed. The fact that Congress didn’t fully fund it last year and probably won’t fully fund it now is not because this latest Bill did not pass. If the Appropriations Committee wasn’t going to fund it before, what makes you think that this new Bill would have been funded any differently?
I agree that at 3.2 million a mile, we need the full 2.1 billion, not the 1.2 billion allotted. Cannot find where 1/2 of the money is required to go toward other purposes. If the fence is not built and the money not allocated, then we have an entire federal government telling the public that passing a bill and enforcing a bill are a total waste time.
There is nothing wrong with Duncan Hunter, primarily because I don’t know anything about him at all. I did hear some unknown speak once, so it’s possible it was him. Whoever it was, I liked him. Other then that, I would say I don’t have a problem with him. Now the next question is, if he is the real conservative who could actually get the vote of the base, then why is he doing so poorly? I would really like to know why. I don’t have a problem with Fred Thompson, I just see a potential credibility problem with him and his wife is one reason why, to just start. I agree he sounds good when he talks, he sounds like a solid conservative, but why is he not running?
You're not just a weasel, you are ignorant. The Duncan Hunter fence is still the law of the land. Bush just refuses to build it.
Knock off the race baiting! Can you make your point without accusing others of being racist?
Here is some more reality http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1858443/posts
to confront. Cede the field without a fight and you lose every time. The wolves are circling.
Boy, you're gonna need a new race card, as hard as you are playing that one.
Course everyone knows that the mob only wants to throw Mexicans back to their Turd World existance out of love
Nope, we just want the laws of this country enforced.
Guess if you really want to be insulted you can always find a way.
This from a guy who had a vanity yanked with the reason "idiot on parade."
How many conservative Democrats do you know?
What laws do you want enforced and what is exactly the fine on those laws??
That line and “Work Americans won’t do” have more milage than a Prius. So what is the fine on those laws you want enforced??
Also, since you brought that up; where are you going to get the workers after you deport all the Mexicans??
Pray for W and Our Troops
Gee, laws about entering this country illegally. Working here illegally. Overstaying visas.
As opposed to certain political leaders throwing up hands and saying "we can't do this, plus our political donors love the cheap illegal labor anyway, so let's ignore the lawbreaking and allow them to stay."
You know, those laws.
Around here, the "Record" book comes from Guiness. Ripley's does "Believe it or Not".
