DUBYA'S END
BORDER BILL THE LAST BLOW
June 29, 2007 -- PRESIDENT Bush's disastrous second term has not been without its moments. Unfortunately for him, these moments have come primarily when members of his own party have risen up against him to defy his wishes. That's what happened yesterday. For the second time in four weeks, Republicans in the Senate put a stake through the heart of Bush's beloved but politically catastrophic immigration bill.
It's also what happened in the early months of the second term, when Bush chose to nominate his unqualified aide, Harriet Miers, to the Supreme Court - and finally backed down and had her withdraw her name after three weeks of lobbying and complaining.
(snip)
He would not and could not back down on immigration reform, an issue far too close to his heart. But after the Senate first rejected the bill at the end of May, Bush could have left it alone and accepted defeat. He could have seen reason, as he did in January 2004 when he first proposed a piece of legislation and was met with an uprising from his conservative base - whereupon he prudently dropped the subject because he was running for re-election and needed a united and enthusiastic Republican electorate behind him.
(snip)
And perhaps most interesting, Bush chose to believe it was more important to court potential future Republican voters - those illegals who would have gained a "path to citizenship" under the terms of the bill in 13 years' time - rather than listen to the concerns of present-day Republican voters.

As I said in a thread a few weeks ago, we should give credit where credit is due. There aren't many online posters clever enough to choose a screen name that is simultaneously a noun, a verb, and... perfectly descriptive of their posting style...
It’s possible to disagree with the President without being a jerk
Her family always lived in Arizona. Her ancestors lived there before it was American territory.
You're the one that found the need to traipse out your wife's pedigree...as if it gives you some sort of Papal dispensation.
In reality your wife is 'Mexican' like I'm Sicilian/German.
Thanks DC, dittos!

How did President George W Bush “muck up” the Iraq war?? In my book the Surge is Working.

I, too, will not jump ship. Although I do NOT for the life of me understand everything about this President or why this approach was taken regarding the “immigration problem”, he is truly a good man, he’s smart (no matter what anyone says to the contrary, particularly those currently “jumping ship”) and HE’S NOT A DEMOCRAT!!! A lot of us out here are mad and hell and we’re not going to take it anymore, but hold on. What is our option right now? We have done what we set out to do: kill the bill. OK. It’s dead in the water. Now what? Are we going to eat our own young, as the saying goes? Are we, too, going to make a concerted effort to completely DESTROY the President? He’s not evil. He’s a man. These are tough times, people. Calm down and start considering our future and HOW to fix the immigration mess we have right now.
Lets just hope he doesn't do anything real stupid in an effort to rescue his poisonous legacy. There is so much anger and hostility in the hinterlands now over this endless invasion, I'd hate to see what would happen if this guy started another fire.
1. NEVER stay in a motel with ‘VACANT’ painted on the side wall.
2, NEVER move to a town you can’t spell.
3. NEVER bur a used car from a salesman named ‘BIG HEARTED EDDIE’.
4. never, never never vote for a Democrat.
If for no other reason losing the debate with the anti-war Democrats and then losing the hearts and minds of the American people. Poll after poll says Bush's inability to communicate objectives and strategy about the global war on terror have been disastrous.
Come to think of it, I don't think Bush ever engaged in the debate with the anti-war Democrats. And that is the problem.
I see Fred Thompson as out next President.
But my primary vote will go to Duncan Hunter.
Anything wrong with Hunter?
BTW I can’t see your issue with Thompson’s wife.
Another fine conservative would be Tom Tancredo.
However since Hunter and Tancredo are unlikely to get the GOP nomination, much less the general vote, I look forward to a Thompson Presidency. With either of those three candidates we will get our fence.
You have to ask?
Har de har har.
Bush will have left a good legacy though. Did you enjoy the decisions coming out of the SCOTUS this week?
What would make a republican president be ..FOR.. the amnesty of 20+ million illegal aliens that will become voting democrats?.. Bush is the democrats secret WEAPON..
He “mucked” it up by not convincing Rats that the Iraq War was the right thing to do. As if anybody could. Your hatred has you completely blinded.
I have long suspected that the Mexican debate was a way for “conservatives” to find a way to stop supporting the war and still appear ‘conservative’.

LOL!
If there was an award for the most bizarre post of the year, you'd get the award my friend.
Then there must be a shred of truth in it. You really don’t support the President or “his” war do you. And of course your not a Cut & Runner...
