The official roll breaks down the vote alphabetically, by state, and of course by vote. What it doesnt do is tell you the order they voted in, which is critical to understanding (or at least inferring) motive. Theyre supposed to vote in alphabetical order, but if theyre not present when the roll is called or if they are present but would rather keep mum to see how things are shaking out they get skipped, and can then approach the podium afterwards, when they see fit, to cast their ballot.
So heres how it went, based on a once-through of the videotape. Boldface indicates Republicans, underline means they switched from yes on the cloture vote on Tuesday to no today. Forty members voted during the alphabetical roll. Note that fully six of them switched and only five switches total were needed to kill the bill. The other fencesitters must have noticed, sensed the momentum, and recalibrated their own votes accordingly. The other notable is the Burr-Harkin-Pryor-Nelson run. They all voted no, all in succession, and were all switchers, which makes we wonder if they had an informal agreement among themselves.

Sad to see Brownback flipflop and not get it right the first time. He must be hearing the momentum storms for Fred passing him by a long time ago and wanted to attract a new voting segment. Uma, Oprah, Rudy, Sammy.
Yes, still weasels.
I got news for you Brownback. You are finished as a Presidential contender. You are not a leader. You are a follower. Go back to Kansas from whence u came.
I’m not sure it’s a good description about other than Brownback.
Some of the so called “switchers” indicated from the beginning they would vote “yes” to bring the bill to debate, and vote “no” on cloture so as to continue debate. It could be argued they are not switchers at all.
Voting “Yes” instantly got every conservative voter in America pissed as hell - and they will remember it, and every liberal/hispanic voter pissed off since he changed his vote to NO - and they will remember it.
Not well planned at all...
some of the others, like Coleman and Collins held back as well.
All in all, I am pleased with how *badly* it did on the final vote. This was no better than a month ago, and kills the bill ... for now.
Now we need to go back to ENFORCEMENT FIRST and get the Congress to put a narrower enforcement only bill together to start the ball rolling.
1. Build the fence
2. Fix the employer verification
3. Get US visit really implemented
4. Deport criminal aliens.
Take 24 months to do this and then we can discuss changing immigration law, ie replacing chain migration with merit immigration, etc.

Dittos ... if he can’t handle how to decide a cloture vote, he is not fit to be Commander in Chief... (or “the decider”).

Also Burr.
These RINOS need to apologize to Kerry who voted for the war before he voted against it.
Brownback, yellowbelly?
LOL!
I’m simply STUNNED that one of my lib rat Senators voted NO and in the 1st round.
Unbelievable!
He’s one up on Brownback, who has entered the “I voted against it after I voted for it” realm . . .
You understand that this was a scam position to give them cover. They figured that the bill would pass if it got past cloture and their 'no' vote would make them look good even though their 'yes' on cloture was what would have let the beast through the door in the first place. They were trying to have it both ways and got caught out when the citizens slapped the bill down.
Being from Kansas, I have to live with Brownback as my senator for quite awhile, since he was re-elected just last year. I called his office last month to discuss his position on the immigration bill, and I know for a fact he supports it. His vote today was a weak attempt at gaining political cover by pretending to be on the right side of this issue.
I couldnt agree with you more! We need to remind those that did the right thing in the end, that we were watching and thank them. Then send to your congressmen and senators the following:
(US Citizenship and Immigration)
These are just two of dozens of government sites to inform about our Laws for Labor and for becoming a Citizen. These are huge departments and very costly to the taxpayer
we are not getting our moneys worth yet Kennedy, Durbin, Reid, McCain, Boxer, Clinton, etc. tried like mad to make us accept more Bureaucracies and redundant laws
..we already have laws that are not being Enforced - DEMAND THEY BE ENFORCED!!
