(CBS) NEW YORK -- Former New York Mayor David N. Dinkins endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, her campaign announced Thursday.
In a statement from the Clinton Campaign, Dinkins said, "Her depth of experience and her strength of character make her uniquely suited to be President."
Dinkins, the first African-American to serve as mayor of New York, held office from 1990 to 1994.
"Mayor Dinkins has been a leading voice for social justice in New York and across the country, and I'm honored to have his support," Clinton said.
Dinkins' tenure is remembered for his "Safe Streets, Safe City" program, which hired thousands of new police officers and began the decline of crime rates in New York City.
He also worked to create an all-civilian Police Oversight Board to review misconduct complaints.
In addition to his tenure as mayor, Dinkins has served as a New York State Assemblyman, president of the city Board of Elections, City Clerk and Manhattan Borough president.
He currently teaches at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, and is involved in other political and philanthropic work.
Well, if Dinkins is for her it’s a lock.

Wonderful. Hillary can make the whole country like NYC was when Dinkins was mayor.
For those who weren’t there, NYC was a cesspool. Guiliani came in after Dinkins and remade the “ungovernable” city. You couldn’t walk down a street without risking your life.
Dinkins big bit was to refuse to march in the St Patricks Day parade because they wouldn’t let homos in.

The only reason you had fireworks with Dinkins and not Guiliani was Dinkins was incompetant to take them away from you. NY has always gone to war against fireworks.
Come down to west coast FL for the Fourth. Just sitting in a driveway in certain areas is like watching a major display. Especially the less high class areas. The rednecks here take their fireworks seriously. They spend thousands.
Also Christmas. I’ve never seen displays like I see in the less affluent neighborhoods here. They actually have whole blocks that stretch lights overhead to make tunnels.
Wasn’t it under Dinkins that the fed refused to take NYC into receivership?
That will get the Hil some votes from incompetent racists who are elected for their background rather than their competence.

His endorsement of The Witch will probably hurt her more than help. CBS probably would have been better off - for its own sake - not to have written this insignificant story.

Under Dink we averaged a murder every 4.5 hours for a whole year. Even Jimmy (the check cleared, Abdul) Carter can’t match that level of consistent domestic horror.
