The destroyers who defeated a battleship task force. Agreed, it's an amazing story.
“Sir, don’t let us be sunk with our torpedoes unfired”. They knew how the battle was going to turn out with plenty of time to think about it.
Yeah thanks the link the other guy gave me made much more sense than the article’s telling of the tale.
I remember seeing the History Channel presentation of the battle, and was so incredibly proud of our brave men. Here's the Wikipedia entry for the Battle of Leyte Gulf--scroll down to the Battle of Samar to see the fighting spirit our men have.
Ping?
...coffin was not found until 1906...
This is true. I read a very interesting story in Smithsonian magazine about this. Apparently, during renovations to a dilapidated neighborhood in Paris, an old cemetary was found. One of the graves contained a lead lined coffin which was labeled John Paul Jones. The coffin was opened, it had been filled with alcohol and the body of Jones was well preserved. I can’t remember for sure, but I believe photographs were taken of the body before re-internment at Annapolis.

He can’t be dead, I just saw him playing with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
