GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Bill Barnes said he was scratching off a losing $2 lottery ticket inside a gas station when he felt a hand slip into his front-left pants pocket, where he had $300 in cash.
He immediately grabbed the person's wrist with his left hand and started throwing punches with his right, landing six or seven blows before a store manager intervened.
He's anything but an easy mark: Barnes served in the Marines, was an accomplished Golden Gloves boxer and retired after 20 years as an iron worker.
Barnes said he'd probably do the same thing again under the same circumstances, if for no other reason than what he would face back home.
"I wouldn't want my wife to give me hell for lettin' that guy get my money," he said with a smile.

“I’d like to meet his wife.”
I don’t (mental images of Godzilla).
The guy was a marine, boxer, and a retired ironworker(the least intelligent of all trades, IMHO), and he's afraid of the wife? Damn, that's one tough broad!
Sweet. I’ll bet that pickpocket takes a little more time to carefully read the label on the next can of whoop@$$ he tries to open...
After the first few shots, looks like he throws a knee to the ribs in there too - Way to go old guy!
Talk about "contents under pressure".
The thing that pisses me off in every one of these stories is the term “ex” Marine.
As far as I can tell, there is no such thing as an “ex” Marine. They *do* something to men when they make them Marines that results in ass-whuppin’s like this even when a Marine is at a very advanced age. Marines just don’t take crap. Period, full stop, end of discussion. This pickpocket just found out first-hand that there are no “ex” Marines.
In the last week, we’ve had a Marine kill a bear, with nothing more than a log. A month ago, a Marine killed a clown who was trying to drive over a cop. If a guy pays attention to these press stories, it becomes pretty clear that Marines are overrepresented in the “just damn!” category of stories.
So why do the card-carrying morons in the press keep calling Marines who are no longer in active duty “ex”?
try and imagine you’re this guy. retired marine. iron worker. golden gloves boxer. then some guy takes you’re money.
it don’t matter if your wife is a waif or a behemoth.. she’s gonna make you feel about an inch tall- and you’ll take every bit of it knowing you deserve it.
there are a few examples of EX marines around.
people like murtha.
Because they are sally’s, who went to journalism school, where there biggest responsibility was finding more weed for the bong, not protecting a nation. Nothing they will ever do will be as important as the role of a US Marine.
Remember the good ole John Wayne kinda days in America where if someone tried to steal your stuff or harm you, you just shot them?
There. Fixed it.
Besides great physical agility and stamina, Ironwork involves great skill and mental capability. Ironworkers handle heavy objects, under difficult and varying conditions, with a very big commitment on safety.
Before becoming a Journeyman Ironworker, my son served a two year apprenticeship, attending night school twice a week to learn the job. As a result of the training required of Ironworkers, in his almost 20 years on the job, the only person killed on a job that my son worked, was a supervisor who never had training.
Ironworkers, in addition to being in good physical condition, are some of the most friendly and caring individuals you would want to know.
Please reconsider your comment.
Who sez there are NO EX-MARINES!
THE HELL THERE AIN’T NO EX-MARINES! I SERVED W/MANY PRE-WWII, WWII, KOREAN WAR, ETC. MARINES WHO PROUDLY REFER TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AS “EX-MARINES”!!!!!
BIGMOUTH BOOT JARHEADS CLAIMING OTHERWISE DON’T MEAN ****!
