The first measureable snowfall in almost 26 years has blanketed Johannesburg, South Africa, closing roads, delaying flights and claiming at least one life.
Weather officials say as many as 10 centimeters of snow fell over the area Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Children were seen playing in area parks, while others were saving snowballs as souvenirs of the fast-melting snow.
The officials say the last recorded snowfall for the area was in September of 1981. Temperatures Wednesday dipped below freezing in several areas.
Aviation officials say flights at Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) International airport were delayed for up to three hours while planes were de-iced.
Emergency officials say they found a homeless man dead in Johannesburg's city center. They say the man died from exposure.
Several major roads were closed due to the snow, but transportation officials have reported only minor accidents.
Gore is scratching his head about snow in summer.
That’s why they had to change it to Global Climate Change......to cover all bases.
Thought I heard Australia has had the coldest June day on record.
“Gore is scratching his head about snow in summer”
LOL
Especially when it is winter down there?
snort....oh sure, point out the obvious. Oh wait. Maybe someone missed that little fact.
I know that, and you know that, but dont bet your bottom dollar that our warming expert does.
I was in Jo’burg earlier this month ... night time temperatures were in the low 40’s. Snow is very unusual ...
I was IN Johannesburg the last time it snowed! We had a grand old time...we lived in Berea at the time. Now Berea looks like a war zone.
“Snow is very unusual”
yep...which is why I posted it...
of course I remember the same “experts” talking about “global cooling” back in the 70’s
Someone else who doesn’t know the difference between climate and weather.
Haven`t you heard?
Global warming leads to localized cooling, which then in turn leads to global warming which then leads to global cooling which then...
Uh, it's winter in South Africa right now. They're in the Southern Hemisphere.
Just remember: It’s global warming if it’s hot, and global warming if it’s not.
Flew into Jo'burg spent the night at the Intercontinental Hotel at the airport and flew north to Botswana early the next day. On our return we stopped in Jo'burg for brief layover on our way to Cape Town. Returning to the US we flew thru Jo'burg, once again a brief layover. No desire to visit Jo'burg, although Pretoria intrigues me somewhat ... maybe next trip.
***of course I remember the same experts talking about global cooling back in the 70s***
Yep. They said we’d die of the cold in the dark.
