State Police searching Virginia Tech duck pond

By Dawn Jefferies / 10 On Your Side

Jun 25, 2007

It was here, at the Virginia Tech duck pond witnesses reported seeing Seung Hui Cho the morning of April 16th. Today, the duck pond is being drained. Virginia state police say they're leaving no stone unturned.

Back in April, 10 on your side was there when teams searched the area, only saying it was a routine part of the investigation. Teams will come out and search this area again but they have to wait until the water drains.

Last week, the Washington Post reported ATF agents said Cho removed the hard drive from his computer and that it's never been found. The report goes on to say police have also looked for Cho's hard drive, including a search of the duck pond.

State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller won't say what investigators might be looking for. She says they're following leads and looking for any potential evidence. Once the water drains, teams will conduct grid searches looking for anything that might be beneath the water.

Gellar says they don't know how long it will take to drain the pond. She says the university is doing the drain and state police decided to use it as an opportunity to check it again.

State Police say they remain the primary investigators in the Virginia Tech shootings and say last week's release of a 911 transcript to a reporter was unauthorized.

Is the expense of this really necessary?

Is it that important to try and pinpoint to what level of homicidal nuttiness this loser descended?

Not just mud. Lots of ducks in that duck pond.

The data is probably recoverable, but the lingering question is “Why?”

Why bother all Cho had to do was use a friggin magnet and all the investigators could do is cry.

How about having an after action review and say hey next time someone chains the doors shut we run a police cruiser through the doorways.

How about real training to confront gunmen instead of hiding behind trees and wandering around in mud.

I would suspect they're trying to rule out Cho having had any assistance in putting together his plan, or perhaps they already know or suspect he had help and are trying to ID the party.

I agree with other posters: the data is probably recoverable, but what’s the point?

IMO it’s important to know whether Cho was in contact with any individuals or groups relevant to what he did.

While, based on what we know so far, the answer is probably no, nevertheless given the magnitude of this mass murder it is important to definitively answer this question if possible.

Maybe they will find the smoking gun that will tell them if he really did it.

I think they have to open the drive and clean off the discs. The folks at Drive Savers in California have a museum of disk-sasters in which they were able to recover data from hard drives, including one that was in a Powerbook at the bottom of a river for several days.
