Virginia Beach, VA (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-abortion Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani continued his efforts to reach out to primary voters who may be inclined to support other candidates because of his position. He told an audience at Regent University that the issue of terrorism is the most important single issue in the campaign.
Giuliani gave a 30 minute speech Tuesday at the conservative Christian university and never mentioned abortion directly or how he is out of step with most Republican voters, who are pro-life.
But he did appear to acknowledge the divide between his views and those of GOP voters he needs to capture the party's nomination.
"Don't expect you're going to agree with me on everything because that would be unrealistic. I don't agree with myself on everything," he said, using a self-deprecating tactic he's employed before.
"But if you agree with me about enough things, and you think I have the ability to lead then maybe I'm the person you can support," he added.
He urged pro-life voters to look beyond their differences with him over abortion and appeared to say that the destruction of more than 1.2 million unborn children annually was not the top issue facing Americans.
"It's not about one issue, it's about many issues," he said, according to a transcript of his speech. "If there is one issue that dominates ... is the fact that Islamic terrorists are planning to kill us. They have succeeded in doing it and they want to do it again."
After the speech, Giuliani talked with reporters about how he approached abortion in it. He told Reuters that he did not purposefully avoid the issue of abortion.
But Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, who has said he couldn't vote for Giuliani in the primary, told Reuters that pro-life voters could work together to stop the former New York mayor from getting the party's nod.
"Social conservatives cannot elect a president but they certainly can prevent one from being elected," he said.
yeah, it’s good that he wants to protect us from terrorists but those unborn babies that are being murdered don’t seem to elicit the same protective impulse. I don’t understand that.
Rudy is to the left of a lot of the Blue Dogs. His positions were very similar to Hillary in 2000, although he was to the left of her on some issues.
Just what does a statement like that mean?
It would seem to be an extremely vacuose attempt at appearing witty.
I think that it is evidence of a guilty soul.
They are two NY liberals. In the northeast liberals disguise themselves as Republicans just to keep the illusion of a two party system alive.
Rudolph Giuliani has also many other issues to worry about. He is not the man to lead this country in face of the frightening immigration bill hanging over our heads.
This Social Conservative considers abortion to be murder. There is no federal law prohibiting murder. On the other hand there is no federal law that prohibits any state from making murder a crime.
There is a federal law (passed by the US Supreme Court) that prohibits all states from making abortion a crime. This law (Rowe v Wade) is unconstitutional - see the 10th amendment.
For him, maybe. Rudy must not understand America doesn't need a tone deaf one-note bell choir boy for President.
abandoned someone i never supported ?
that’s rich
Title 18, USC.
Well maybe over gun control or his support of free speech restriction or special rights for gays or his support for illegal hispanics then. A left wing liberal in drag from NYC (the liberal anus of the second left coast) is still a left wing liberal in drag from NYC even if he is a Republican.
It's the arrogance and hubris that infect the elected once they get inside the beltway. They KNOW better than we do and they're going to cram their ideas down out throats regardless of our feelings. Makes no difference (apparently) if they're democrats or republicans.
Will someone please tell me why Rudy doesn’t just switch over to the Rat party? What exactly about him is conservative or Republican??? I just don’t see it....
All I can say is, HUH!??? Blackbird.
They've already got a leftist from NY running for president. Roody figured there was less competition for the liberal vote if he ran as a RINO.
I don’t think Ghouliani’s one supposed “strong point” being his stance on the WOT is any better than what we’ve heard from Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson.
I simply don’t trust him to do the right thing on any issue when I know he’ll do the wrong thing on all the major social issues.
LOL. Sorry, Fruity. Abortion is one of the many reasons I will NEVER support you for president.
Rudy still has a few things rightwing about him. His leftism and Hillary’s leftism will cancel each other out. But Hillary will continue to have a balance after that. After all, she intends to take over the whole economy. Rudy doesn’t. I will vote Rudy over a Marxist communist commissar in black pajamas, I guess I should have put it that way.
he should have thought about that before he ran
