Curtis Allgier, a white supremacist prisoner who was taken to the hospital complaining of lower back pain stole a correctional officer’s gun on Monday and killed him, authorities said.  He then led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen sport utility vehicle before his capture at a fast-food restaurant. Authorities said he could face the death penalty.  The officer who was killed was identified as Stephen Anderson, 60, a 22-year corrections employee.

Curtis Allgier, whose wears a swastika and the words "skin head" on his heavily tattooed face, fired a shot in the Arby's that hit no one before a customer at the restaurant grabbed the gun, Salt Lake City police Sgt. Rich Brede said. "It sounds like he was heroic, even though he's being humble about it," he said of the 59-year-old customer.

The convict complained of his "lower back pain" to prison medical staff members, who made a referral for an M.R.I. evaluation outside the state prison in Draper.  That's where it all went wrong.  The New York Times reports that Allgier had been shackled at the hands and feet, officials said. But for the M.R.I. his metal cuffs had to be replaced with plastic ones.  Allgier then got the gun from corrections officer Stephen Anderson while he was in an examination room at the University of Utah orthopedic center.

University Police Chief Scott Folsom said. "There was some sort of altercation. The inmate got hold of the weapon and shot the officer."  He was shot in the head.  Mr. Allgier has not yet been charged and remains in custody in the Salt Lake City Jail.

He had been an inmate at the Utah State Prison in the Salt Lake City after he was sentenced to nearly nine years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in June.

With a face like that, I guess he wasn't really planning on leading a productive life when he got out of prison.

No need to worry about that now.

A Hero Emerges From Monday's Tragic Shooting

(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY Monday's tragic events could have been much worse if it weren’t for a special customer inside a fast food restaurant.

Eric Fullerton may look small but he’s got a big heart and apparently some big muscles.

“I didn’t have time to think about being scared,” said Fullerton. “I wrestled the gun from him. I took the gun from him.”

When Curtis Allgier jumped out of a Ford Explorer and into the Arby’s at 1700 south and Redwood Road Eric Fullerton didn’t flinch.

He didn’t know police suspected Allgier of killing a corrections officer.

He just knew he wasn’t going to let him kill anybody else.

“I just instinctively did what needed to be done. He was going to kill that guy, and I wasn’t going to let him kill him,” says Fullerton.

“Everybody’s calling me a hero,” Fullerton said. “I’m not a hero; I just did what I had to do.”

The suspect, Curtis Allgier, is about three times bigger than Fullerton and he had a gun and a knife.

In fact Allgier actually cut Fullerton’s throat but that didn’t stop this Vietnam veteran from ending a deadly day.

“I can’t tell you how I did it or what I did,” Fullerton said. “I don’t know if it was adrenaline or if I had a guardian angel watching over me. I have no idea.”

 

He says, “I’m just glad the other guys alive and everybody got out safe.”

“Everybody’s calling me a hero,” Fullerton said. “I’m not a hero; I just did what I had to do.”

Eric Fullerton fought the larger, well-armed man and won.
