Hindu Prayer Will Open Senate Session in July
CNS ^ | June 26, 2007 | Nathan Burchfiel

Posted on 06/26/2007 8:18:26 AM PDT by RDTF

For what is believed to be the first time in its history, the U.S. Senate will on July 12 be opened with a Hindu prayer, the Senate Chaplain's Office confirmed Monday.

For more than 200 years, the Senate has opened each workday with a prayer usually delivered by the Senate Chaplain, currently Barry Black, a Seventh Day Adventist. It is common, however, for senators to recommend religious leaders from their home states to serve as guest chaplains.

Rajan Zed, a Hindu chaplain from Nevada, on will become the first Hindu to deliver the morning prayer. In a statement announcing his scheduled appearance, Zed called the occasion "an illustrious day for all Americans and a memorable day for us."

-snip-

Zed, a U.S. citizen originally from India, said he has not finalized the prayer but that it will likely quote Hindu scriptures including the Rig Veda, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad-Gita.

-snip-

Senate Historical Office (SHO) historian Betty Koed said the office doesn't have a complete list of past guest chaplains but that she knew of "no evidence of a Hindu prayer" being spoken on the Senate floor in the past.

-snip-

While the majority of official and guest chaplains represent Protestant, Catholic or Jewish faiths, Zed is not the first religious figure outside the Judeo-Christian tradition to offer the daily prayer. In 1992, Wallace Mohammed became the first Muslim leader to deliver the invocation.

Spokesmen for both Nevada senators - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican John Ensign, the most likely candidates to have recommended Zed for the guest chaplain position - did not respond to requests for comment Monday. Zed did not say which senator requested that he be invited as a guest chaplain.

What a narrow, short sighted, intolerant point of view. Would you ban all religions other than Christianity? How far is it from your form of intolerance for other faiths and the Taliban?

You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to believe it, but you certainly should respect it if you have any desire for others to respect your faith.

When they open with an Aztec prayer session including removal of beating hearts from a hundred victims that will be worthy news.

Well, this is ‘what’: by having the Senate, a body that has always promoted ‘one god’, going to promoting ‘any number of god(s), you in effect delegitimize ALL gods.

And that’s fine, as long as all gods, including the one god have no problem with that ... er, that it is ‘safe’ to do that.

But there is a chance, ranging from zero to 100 percent that a certain God is not open to being delegitimized.

America has been a blessed nation, but the issue is from where did these blessings flow? Luck?

its a free country, you can believe what you want. Thats the point.

as long as what one beliefs dosen’t interfere with me, my families beliefs and their peace and happiness, and lifestyle, I don't care if one worships a mushroom, the Dahli Lama or Xenu. When religions, like Islam believe if you are an infidel and need to be killed because of it or made a slave thats when I have an issue.

The strange people who run the US Senate do not realize, evidently, that you can only get to heaven through Christ.

Dear God, save us from these pagans and atheists.

No wonder corporate America is going “diversity”. So I wonder who is leading this charge, our government or our employers.

I think the Jews in Congress would disagree. And the Muslim.

I have no problem with Hindus...that is their business. I haven’t seen many Americans killed by enraged Hindus...I haven’t heard where they are demanding special treatment.

And I certainly haven’t heard they view all non-Hindus as subhuman.

I am okay with that...this whole thing is just politically correct hooey.

Personally, I want to see what the libs do when someone proposes adherents of Voodoo or Wiccans want to have their day opening the session. That ought to be entertaining.

And...btw...glad you are in America! People like you have SEEN real “multiculturalism”, so you know about what it really is.
