June 26, 2007 -- Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato has selected a team of prominent Republicans - including outgoing MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow - to lead Fred Thompson's presidential effort in New York, The Post learned yesterday.
Kalikow, a major developer, will be responsible for fund-raising in the city's super-affluent real-estate community while Syracuse-area businessman and former state GOP boss Patrick Barrett will raise funds upstate, D'Amato said.
D'Amato, who will head up Thompson's New York campaign and serve as an adviser to his national effort, said he expects the former U.S. senator from Tennessee to officially declare his candidacy "in the next two weeks."
Port Authority Commissioner Bruce Blakeman and former Public Service Commission Chairman John O'Mara will also play important roles in Thompson's New York campaign, D'Amato said.
In addition, Tom Doherty, the former chief patronage dispenser to former Gov. George Pataki will handle grass-roots operations, according to D'Amato.
Doherty had left his state post to join Mercury Public Affairs, a firm headed by former D'Amato Chief of Staff Kieran Mahoney.
"We'll have a strong team, and I'm confident that Thompson will be able to win this," D'Amato said.

"We'll have a strong team, and I'm confident that Thompson will be able to win this," D'Amato said.Is he talking about the primary or the general?
Do they think Thompson can take NY from Hillary? That would be interesting.
28-27, actually. And if the author thinks that is "shocking", wait until he gets a load of this week's Rasmussen, where Thompson leads 27-23.
uhhh...not Senator Pothole...anybody but that RINO.
Geeze.
Alone, probably not. However, the field is completely different if Bloomberg or another big-name third-party liberal shows up on the scene.
It’s political strategy. Al D’Amato won statewide in NY. He knows how to do it. Fred could have chosen a great conservative...but he wouldn’t know how to win in NY, since a good conservative won’t win NY.
Let’s not confuse political campaign allies with ideology. Just because he chooses someone to help his campaign, doesn’t mean they have the same ideology. It’s more due to how much help he can give Fred in winning a particular state.
Rudi’s stock continues to slide. Payback for his constant treachery to the New York GOP, especially that endorsement of Cuomo to defeat Pataki.
