Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday.
Britain's defence ministry would not confirm or deny the report, with a spokesman declining to comment on "intelligence matters".
An unidentified intelligence source told the tabloid: "It is an extremely alarming development and raises the stakes considerably. In effect, it means we are in a full on war with Iran -- but nobody has officially declared it."
"We have hard proof that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have crossed the border to attack us. It is very hard for us to strike back. All we can do is try to defend ourselves. We are badly on the back foot."
The Sun said that radar sightings of Iranian helicopters crossing into the Iraqi desert were confirmed to it by very senior military sources.
In response to the report, a British defence ministry spokesman said: "There is evidence that explosive devices used against our troops in southern Iraq originated in Iran."
"Any Iranian link to armed militias in Iraq either through weapons supply, training or funding are unacceptable."
Britain has about 7,100 soldiers in Iraq, most of whom are based in the southern city of Basra and surrounding areas, though the government has pledged to reduce that to between 5,000 and 5,500 this year.
Good thought.
Let’s see.
Sun tabloid?
How reliable can this be?
I mean I have no doubt Iran is meddling big time, hell beyond meddling.
I have a brother-in-law who server two tours in Iraq during this war. He told us LAST YEAR that the US was already fighting in Iran, but no one is reporting it.
A month or so ago,,,the “last” one of these stories that came from that area was a “cross-river” attack,,,
(they forgot to look at a map)...;0)
So it starts—I always thought Iran would strike first. How long will it be before we understand that this is war.
I thought the comparison of Mexican border crossers to the Iranians was apropos (and clever to boot) Cheers!
>> Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops ...
... carrying trinkets and Iranian memorabilia.
To be honest, I doubt that the report is true. The terrorist regime in Tehran is not that stupid to start a war with us that will cause the total destruction of their military machine by our Air and Naval power alone.
All “unnamed” officials from a “tabloid”. If and when I ever see a column of Iranian tanks reported by the USAF entering Iraq then I will show some concern.
<<< This article has absolutely nothing to do with our immigration problems. >>>
Really? But pse get your head out of wherever. We’re in Iraq and Iranians illegally crossing the Iraqi border has nothing to do with illegal immigration? I say it has, except that in this case, these ba$tard$ just happen to kill British and American troops.
Exactly.
Please explain to me how the amnesty bill, the way we are managing our borders and how we are managing the war in Iraq have any relationship to each other?
Ah, I just figured it out, you all hate the way Bush is managing both.
At least please be honest about it instead of making meaningless comparisons.
Iran should be bombed back to the 7th century, putting all Iranians on foot and in the dark. And not just the Nuclear sites, we should destroy Iran’s entire Energy industry, a “true strategic bombing”. Every pipeline, tank farm, power plant, refinery, and tanker truck and rail car should be destroyed. With 30% unemployment, 30% of those with jobs working for the Government, terrible inflation, riots/demonstrations already common, and now with everyone including the Government on foot and in the dark, large sections of Iran would be in revolt in short order. Without communications and transportation, the Government would be helpless to prevent the spread of Revolution.
Sure this would cause some pain at the pump for mankind, but it would also terrify every nation whose only asset is oil, that the USA could do the same thing to them, I think they will be very forth coming in producing more oil. It would also remind the entire world that the global trading system is an American system, secured by American power, and America can refuse to let you play. Every potential enemy will have to re-examine their relationship with the USA, to make sure they don’t risk getting bombed back into the 7th century.
Touch a nerve, did we?
