A company headed by the niece of Gov. Haley Barbour has won bidding for a country club once owned by imprisoned ex-WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers. The company, Alcatec, is owned by Rosemary Ramirez Barbour, who is married to Hinds County Supervisor Charles Barbour, the governor’s nephew. Rosemary Barbour said Thursday that her company bid $810,000 for the Brookhaven Country Club. “I think it’s great for the community,” she said. The country club formerly owned by Ebbers includes almost 130 acres with an 18-hole golf course, eight tennis courts, a swimming pool, a clubhouse, maintenance sheds and a home. Rosemary Barbour plans to keep the club open. Eleven jobs will be saved, she said. The deal should close on or before July 10, said Bill Brandt, president/CEO of Chicago-based Development Specialists Inc. Details such as whether the club will be public or private are still being worked out, Rosemary Barbour said. “We’re hoping to grow the membership, and it will impact the community,” she said. Brookhaven officials have said they hope the golf course continues to operate because the city is a certified retirement community and many retirees like to play golf. Also, the course provides entertainment for corporate prospects. “I do know that it will draw people to the area,” Rosemary Barbour said. Regarding Ebbers’ remaining assets, Brandt said his company is close to selling Ebbers’ majority interest in the large Jackson-area based trucking firm KLLM. Ebbers, 65, was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in 2005 for his role in the accounting scandal that led to WorldCom’s collapse. He began serving his sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, La., in September 2006.

Regardless, it translates into $6,230 an acre. Ranch land for grazing cows fetch more than that per acre.

Maybe it does. But remember they also bought some maintenance headaches and a serious payroll. I'm not sure yet they got a great deal.

A woman is the registered owner. The SBA will be throwing tons of low interest, maybe even some free, loans to her.

“Regardless, it translates into $6,230 an acre. Ranch land for grazing cows fetch more than that per acre.”

Ain’t life cruel? Talk about being in the right place at the right time. But again, what is is going to cost to rehab the place from run-down grazing land back into a classy place to cuss that stupid white ball.

Back in my 20s, right after I got out of the USAF, I might have been involved in an effort to put together that kind of scratch for such an investment.

I worked for a guy who played fast and loose with (mostly other people’s) money. He almost put together $800K to buy a bankrupt brothel in Vegas. His family’s objections and refusal to help him run it are what stopped him. And at that stage in my life, a brothel was the last place I needed to be “managing”. I would have -— hmmm, how to say it -— ahhh -— I would have “plowed all the profits back into the business.” Yeah, that’s what I’ll call it.

I’m just glad I got away from his employ before the IRS came-a-calling. He learned the hard way that the gubmint doesn’t approve of tax fraud.

.I don’t hate anyone DUDE, I just don’t want people trampling on our laws.

Sure. That's why you're attacking a legal immigrant businesswoman.

The reasons you listed for attacking her were:

* She's Hispanic

* She employs Hispanics

and that's it.

People like you are the biggest thing holding back the movement to end illegal immigration, because you just have to go and make it some kind of anti-Hispanic crusade.

LOL I agree. I guess I’m jealous that I couldn’t hookup on a deal like that. Oh well!

May indeed happen. I'm not in a protected class but have been an employee or sub of multiple companies that are minority-owned, woman-owned, service disabled veteran-owned, etc. All of them benefited from government contracts. Current situation is the SDVOB and virtually all federal departments and agencies are under goal for that setaside. The company should be pretty secure for a while.

I can think of almost nothing where Thad Cochran has ever taken a leadership role for a conservative cause. He often votes the conservative position, but I wonder if he really believes in conservatism. I don’t think he does.

I smell a Diane Feinstein type deal somewhere.

I doubt you could buy any golf course in America for that price much less all the other amenities.

I am in Gulfport and I can assure you that every single Conservative Republican that I know... and that is really the only people that are worth knowing... are so put out by Trent right now that many have vowed to defeat him in the Primary if he runs again... or to simply not vote. NO ONE is giving money to the RNC... no one! We are supporting Conservative causes and Candidates directly. If the Party wants to arm itself with the proper weaponry for the coming battle (CA$H), they had better remember "Of the People, By the People and for the People".

The duet of Amnesty and refusal to defend himself, his administration or the WOT; Mr. Bush has worn thin these days also. I guess you can say we passed fed up long ago. This newfound elitist and condescending tone from DC has been the final straw for the Bedrock Base... and everyone in the Republican hierarchy damn well knows it. We ain’t fergittin’ no time soon either!

We are writing Thad also... for what it is worth. I hold some hope... but that's just how I am.

You ever been to Brookhaven, MS? I’m not sure I’d pay 800K for the whole place.

She is also the number three in Hispanic Republican women. She is a legal immigrant from Guatemala. She employs many Hispanics in the many businesses she runs

Do you have any actual evidence that she supports illegal immigration, or are you just making this up?

I think we are just going to have to rely on the House to kill this snake of a bill. The Senate has shown the American people just how arrogant and out of touch they really are (and always have been). REPEAL THE 17th AMENDMENT!!

LLS,

I am near Gulfport, MS also...and I agree with you 100%. All indications predict that Lott will never be elected again. The Mississippians are furious!! Outraged! I relayed to each of his offices today that I want one question answered by Senator Lott....Who is he working for? Certainly not the people of Mississippi, because every Tom, Dick, and Harry in Mississipi I’ve spoken to, emailed, and heard about feels the same way. And his offices have been bombarded with these calls, faxes, and emails. He simply doesn’t care. It is no longer a govt by the people. He has turned a deaf ear to his constituents. It’s more than disturbing.
Anyway, all the Mississipians I know would never vote for Lott again. Of course, he figures by election time, we will have forgotten. I don’t think so.

OK, anyone who is going to Lott’s office in Jackson tomorrow morning, please reply.

Chip Pickering will be his replacement... I believe. We have a rough few years ahead of us in Mississippi. Trent is vindictive and will show his true self in the next few years.
