"For once you grant such power to the state, it is only a matter of time before your own opinions become criminalized (First they came for...etc, etc)."

The irony of you using an anti-Nazi quote to slam anti-Nazi laws is thick. The laws in Germany are specifically so they don't come for etc, etc or you.

"I mean, c’mon now, is it really your contention that someone should be put in jail for expressing non-violent/politically unpopular opinions?"

It's not like there is no history here. This propaganda was used in the recent past to incite mass murder (that would be the holocaust). Just as you can't yell fire in a theater because someone might get hurt and you can't spout Nazi nonsense in Germany because millions did.

So while I understand your argument and even agree with it in the vast majority of cases (now there is a first) Nazi propaganda in Germany is a special case due to very specific and very bloody history.

The most important reason I have no problem with it in Germany however is much more mundane. It's not my country. It's a democracy and they are free to pass whatever laws they feel they need.

In case you have forgotten, they voted in Hitler. So, given your logic, I guess you wouldn’t have a problem with that either. Our founding fathers were clear that unfettered democracy leads to tyranny.

“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”

- Benjamin Franklin

“Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority...the Constitution was made to guard against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.”

- Noah Webster
