Immigration stance hurts Graham at home, poll finds

en. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) approval rating is taking a pounding in his home state as a result of his strong support for a bipartisan immigration reform bill, a new poll showed Friday.

Graham’s approval rating has sunk to 31 percent and he has a 40 percent disapproval rating, according to a poll released Friday by Atlanta-based InsiderAdvantage. The new poll points to Graham’s support for the Senate immigration bill, which includes a path to citizenship, as a likely reason for his apparent unpopularity.

His disapproval among Republicans is higher — 46 percent — than among Democrats —30 percent. Both give him an approval rating in the low 30s.

Only 21 percent of respondents approved of the immigration bill, while 63 percent disapproved. When asked whether they approved of Graham’s “efforts to reach a consensus among his colleagues” to pass the bill, 24 percent approved and 51 percent disapproved, including 57 percent of Republicans.

“The only thing I know about InsiderAdvantage polls is they claim 40 percent of Americans want both President Bush and Dick Cheney impeached,” said Graham spokesman Kevin Bishop. “Having said that, Lindsey Graham has never governed by the polls — real or bogus — and is not about to start now. When South Carolinians are fairly informed about the immigration reform proposal, there is majority support for its provisions.” (more)

I live in South Carolina and can guarantee you that Graham will NOT be re-elected. He is drunk on power and has forgotton why we voted him into office. What a sell-out.

I am surprised that he has a 31 percent rating.

That seems rather high for this lizard.

Yeah, that’s great that he has a paltry 31% approval, but if there is no credible candidate to run against him in the primary then this information is of no value.

David Beasley is an ass. But I can guarantee you Beasley is looking at these numbers and is seeing an oppurtunity to actually get elected to something again. To understand why Beasley would be a problem, it’s because of his efforts that alot of South Carolinians who ended up finding work after the mills closed had that work taken from them. (Not to mention, closing down a business that one of my inlaws had invested in heavily)

Right now, Beasley is the only person with statewide credibility to challenge Graham in a primary, and he’s as much damaged goods as Graham is. As I recall, DeMint beat Beasley in ‘04. I honestly think that Graham’s seat could end up being a pickup by Democrats, especially considering this odd trend where Bush only won Charleston County by 3 points. Now, if Mark Sanford could be talked into running for Senate, that might change things drastically.

He’s toast. Hopefully, he knows it. Call and let him know that he can start looking for a private sector job among the common folk.

When is he up for reelection? If he’s up in ‘08, somebody better step up to the plate soon and get organized to take him on in the Primary.

Yep, that's what scares me. Graham is so damaged (rightfully so) that a half-baked Dem could walz in and take the seat.

Now, if Mark Sanford could be talked into running for Senate...

That would be great but most entrenched politicians don't like taking on an incumbent from their party.

I sent him an Email lat year when he was in the Gang of 14.

He sent back a very contentious reply indicating that I was intellectually somewhere between a rock and a vegetable.

I have no use for the arrogant little dude with a Napoleonic ego.

.....and has forgotton why we voted him into office.

Lindsay, like many other elected officials exhibiting boundless arrogance, seems to have forgotten that he works for us. He's the employee, not the boss. ....and he needs a reminder in the form of a firing.

Sanford could do it , but would he ? If the Republicans don’t come up with a strong candidate , the Dims might very well pick up that seat .

FredHeads won’t like this but Senator Grahamnesty is the quintessential example why a senator won’t be elected in ‘08, party not relative.

Good, I hope his political future is pounded out of existence by outraged SC Pub voters the next time he tries for the Senate seat that he has disgraced for the last few years. Not saying that I hope a Defeatocrat takes his seat, just a real conservative Republican.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that in a full face photo Graham looks a lot like a smiling hairless chipmunk? Not that that there's anything wrong with that I suppose unless you're biased against hairless chipmunks.

Well, according to a former Daschle aide, Graham was quick to work with Daschle and the minority on a number of issues. After one such meeting, Graham emerged from Daschle's office, walked to the door, turned around, and proclaimed loudly for the Daschle's entire staff to hear:

                                                  Senator Lindsey Graham

If the Republicans fail to challenge Graham with a decent, conservative candidate, then why not have the Constitution Party create a decent challenger instead?
