A gay-rights group is demanding an apology from Newark School Superintendent Marion Bolden for ordering her staff to black out a picture of a gay couple kissing be fore distributing copies of the yearbook to students at East Side High School.
Calling the directive homophobic and unlawful, Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, said yesterday the school also should redistribute a new batch of uncensored yearbooks at the district's expense.
"This action by the school district will have an unspeakably vile chilling effect on other gay and lesbian students coming out," Goldstein said. "Her (Bolden) trying to erase a student and his boyfriend is a metaphor for her trying to erase the gay and lesbian community out of Newark and its school system. It's wrong and it's ridiculous."
The photograph shows East Side High graduating senior Andre Jackson, 18, kissing David Esco bales, 19, of Allentown, Pa., on the lips. It was among several photos printed on a special page paid for by Jackson to commemorate his high school experience, at a cost of $150.
Yesterday, Bolden said the photo was not targeted because it was two men kissing, but because it was "suggestive" in nature and that she should have also censored other suggestive photos in the yearbook.
She said she promotes an atmosphere of tolerance for gay stu dents at Newark schools and in tends to apologize to Jackson if he believes the district did something to hurt him because of his orientation.
"I will call the student to let him know nothing was intended to hurt him or slight him," she said.

Erasing the pair is fine with me.
This guy is going out of his way to offend. The students did not choose this for the yearbook. He actually paid to shove this in the face of every other student in the school.
It’s a tyranny of one.
Seniors picture with sword nixed because of schools no-weapons policy
Portsmouth High School senior and SCA member Patrick Agin may appear in the school yearbook wearing his chainmail, but the broadsword over his shoulder must go, say school officials. Bruce Burdett of the East Bay, Rhode Island newspaper reports.
(AgapePress) - A twelfth-grader is set to sue his New Hampshire high school over its decision to reject his senior yearbook photo featuring a broke-open shotgun slung over his shoulder.
The Londonderry High School yearbook is full of pictures of students holding items from their hobbies. Trombones, paintbrushes, you name it. What it does not have is a picture of Blake Douglass with his skeet shooting rifle. The reason? Having a picture of a gun violates their zero tolerance policy.
Because Christians are not Muslims.
I had a gay next door neighbor that actually told me that very thing(”The homosexuals always claim that what goes on in the privacy of their own bedrooms is their own business”), then got a boyfriend and insisted on making a big show of it to the whole neighborhood, having big parties outside, men all hanging all over each other. To make a long story short, the new boyfriend actually killed him, tried to take all of his property and ended up in jail.
It was a disgusting nuisance for a while but the curse that was on both of their lives was evident to all. It always seemed to me that they were going out of their way to convince everyone else how happy they were, but they seemed really very miserable and in the end, obviously were.(no pun intended)
“Will and Grace” is acceptable with their homosexual normalization agenda because the liberals want to socially engineer a normalization of that particular behavior.
Will and Grace never gave the truth about homosexuality. It was a show that was just silly which is why America watched. This is how the gay lobbyist get things accomplished. They gloss over the actual truth. That is why we will lose this battle IMHO. I am not happy about it but I don’t have any solutions.
And I thought living in a welfare town was interesting enough. You got me beat on that.
There never were in any of mine.
Come on. Surely you can think of about a dozen practical reasons why most high schools don't publish suck-face yearbook photos of their students...
Perhaps the school was embarrassed that this 19 year old, David Esco, was still in high school.
And once homo 'marriage' is forced on all states, this will be de riguer at your local gov't prison for children.
And they’ll be the first to go if we lose the War on Terror that they don’t believe in.
“Douglass is being backed by the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of New Hampshire and will press suit if the decision to ban his picture is not reversed. The district is insured against such suits so is not overly concerned about a legal battle. They did offer a compromise where the picture with the gun would be printed in the sports section of the yearbook.”
This was in 04, how did it end?
Maybe I’m wrong, but I think its always been every school districts policy that no public displays of affection between students are allowed..... Not enforced ardently, but its always been part of their rules.
First of all, don't confuse my tolerance with acceptance. Just looking at that picture makes me physically ill. Let the PC police sue me, sorry I can't help it.
As far as a study is concerned, the only one I saw was done a few years ago where they asked gay people why they were gay. 12% said it was genetic, 9% said it was the environment in which they grew up, 4% blamed the media and 75% said they were just sucked into it. (thank you, I'll be hear all week, don't forget to tip your bartenders and waitresses)
