A gay-rights group is demanding an apology from Newark School Superintendent Marion Bolden for ordering her staff to black out a picture of a gay couple kissing be fore distributing copies of the yearbook to students at East Side High School.
Calling the directive homophobic and unlawful, Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, said yesterday the school also should redistribute a new batch of uncensored yearbooks at the district's expense.
"This action by the school district will have an unspeakably vile chilling effect on other gay and lesbian students coming out," Goldstein said. "Her (Bolden) trying to erase a student and his boyfriend is a metaphor for her trying to erase the gay and lesbian community out of Newark and its school system. It's wrong and it's ridiculous."
The photograph shows East Side High graduating senior Andre Jackson, 18, kissing David Esco bales, 19, of Allentown, Pa., on the lips. It was among several photos printed on a special page paid for by Jackson to commemorate his high school experience, at a cost of $150.
Yesterday, Bolden said the photo was not targeted because it was two men kissing, but because it was "suggestive" in nature and that she should have also censored other suggestive photos in the yearbook.
She said she promotes an atmosphere of tolerance for gay stu dents at Newark schools and in tends to apologize to Jackson if he believes the district did something to hurt him because of his orientation.
"I will call the student to let him know nothing was intended to hurt him or slight him," she said.

He has certainly abandoned SOME to their deviant behavior, but I don’t believe He will ever give up on them. See Sodom & Gomorrah.
You got it.
In truth- they were happier too, despite their passionate claims otherwise.
I was wondering why they just didn’t rip out the page!
I agree ...I liked it much better when they were in the closet too.
Tolerance is all about who is in charge and what they deem to be acceptable.
The lesbian was just sentenced to jail this week.
That's what those America hating progressives do. It's their job...take the greatest country ever on the history of the planet earth and change it. They're retarded. What can I say.
Unfortunately, they are having some success. "I Love Lucy" would be banned from network TV today because Ricky and Lucy smoked on screen and liberals want to denormalize smoking in order to discourage it. "Will and Grace" is acceptable with their homosexual normalization agenda because the liberals want to socially engineer a normalization of that particular behavior.
Social Engineering should be a college major. Fascinating stuff really.
“The lesbian was just sentenced to jail this week.”
Maybe we are thinking of different cases? This was actually 3 years ago.. I was confusing timing.

The love that dare not speaks its name is now the love that won’t STFU.
No, the ruling was just handed down this week. You’re talking about the lesbian women who stabbed the guy who tried to hit on them in Newark right?
“Youre talking about the lesbian women who stabbed the guy who tried to hit on them in Newark right?”
Wasn’t that in Brooklyn? That happened in 2005 or 2006, I think.
I was thinking of the lesbian girl that was murdered in downtown Newark (in 2003, I now find out).
One kid in my graduating class, a true nerd, thought he was too cool to have his senior picture in the yearbook. When the kid’s mother found out her son’s picture wasn’t in the yearbook, she hustled up a giant pile of self-stick individual yearbook photos and made sure that they were distributed throughout every homeroom in the school.
By lunchtime, those photos plastered every toilet seat and urinal in the building.
It was hilarious.
I was referring to this case:
Lesbians in assault to appeal their terms
http://www.nj.com/starledger/stories/index.ssf?/base/news-7/1181967683212270.xml&coll=1
Lawyers for four Newark-area lesbians sentenced to prison this week — one for 11 years — for assaulting a man who made advances toward them in Greenwich Village said yesterday they will appeal the “unusually harsh” prison terms.
“It was very severe, given the nature of the crime,” said Alan Lippel, who represented Patreese Johnson, 19, of Newark, who received the toughest sentence. “The judge seemed to reject everything the defendants said.”
Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Edward McLaughlin made it clear at sentencing Thursday that he had no sympathy for the women, ages 19-25, none of whom had a previous record and who claimed self-defense.
The four were among a group of seven lesbians who fought Dwayne Buckle, 29, last summer after he attempted to pick up Johnson in the West Village. Insults were exchanged and the incident quickly escalated to spitting, then kicking and punching.
The jury found that in the midst of the brawl, Johnson pulled a steak knife from her purse and stabbed Buckle once in the stomach. He was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. He said he also suffered cuts, bruises and scratches.
All of the women were originally charged with gang assault. The jury dismissed a charge of attempted murder against Johnson, but found her guilty of aggravated assault.
Then you probably won't like the picture of Andre and David kissing. ;^)
I know and it really disgusts me. I’ve had it with public schools who dare to think they can tell my 7 yr old who & what a family is. Or the ones who want to tell them its ok to be gay....I wonder if they tell them by being gay they may get AIDS & die? Shaking my head again, ~Pandora~
I most vigorously disagree. You can back up this insight, how?
OTOH, the psychiatric profession listed homosexuality as a mental illness for decades, before political pressure forced the current liberal definition.
Way too many behavioral and environmental indicators are evident to show that this behavior is learned.
Come to think of it, I do not want any pseudo-science that purports to show the were "born that way". I am sick of them and the "debate". That you would make this statement on FR is amazingly liberal.
This is your rifle this is your gun, this is for shooting, this is for... you know the drill. :)
