Black Ordered not to Drink Alcohol; Must Remain in Western NC

Former House Speaker Jim Black can't drink alcohol and has to stay in western North Carolina to await his sentencing next month. Those are the terms set down by a federal judge in a court document filed today.

Black, his attorney, probation officer and U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle signed the change to the conditions of his release.

No reason was given for the change.

The Mecklenburg County Democrat pleaded guilty in February to one count of taking thousands of dollars in cash from chiropractors while promoting their industry's agenda.

The initial terms of Black's release permitted him to travel outside the country with permission from the government. The modified terms limit Black to travel within the western third of North Carolina and elsewhere in the state for court appearances and medical appointments.

The new rules also say he can't drink any alcohol and will submit to testing for it and other prohibited substances.

Ex-Speaker Black's attorneys want grand jury transcripts
Associated Press - June 22, 2007 9:25 PM ET

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Attorneys for former House Speaker Jim Black have asked a federal judge to order prosecutors to give them grand jury transcripts of testimony about a former political ally.

Black's attorneys want the testimony so their client can prepare for his July eleventh sentencing. Black pleaded guilty in February to taking thousands of dollars in cash from chiropractors while promoting their industry's agenda.

The attorneys say prosecutors aren't sure if the transcripts could be provided without a court order. Grand jury proceedings are usually secret.

Black requested testimony from a group that includes any witnesses who provided information to the government that's relevant to ex-Representative Michael Decker.

Decker pleaded guilty in federal court last August to taking $50,000 from Black in a party-switching scheme that gave leverage to Black so he could remain co-speaker in 2003. A judge sentenced Decker to four years in prison.

“Mecklenburg County Democra...”

Did that really appear in the MSM’s article, L? I’d have thought they’d bury/omit it.

This is just one reason why I’d never vote for a RAT and why I’d never go to a chiropractor.

I can understand them not letting him leave Charlotte, but what’s the deal with alcohol. I don’t think drinking makes someone a flight risk.

Right-o, BB.

But usually, the corrupt, criminal MSM buries their party affiliation, or omits any mention of it. Yet with GOP-RINOs or Conservatives, the party affiliation is in the first 15-20 words of the copy.

“This is just one reason why I’d never vote for a RAT and why I’d never go to a chiropractor.”

And MDs have never given money to politicians illegally?

Was wondering that myself. I could see it if he was awaiting a crime for which ‘alcohol may have been a factor’ but have no idea what it has to do with his crime.
