Washington, D.C. (AHN)-President George Bush called on Congress to muster the "political courage" to pass an immigration overhaul that has foundered for weeks in the U.S. Senate.
"We have an obligation to solve problems that have been piling up for decades," President Bush said in his weekly radio address. "The status quo is unacceptable."
The proposed legislation, drafted by a small group of senators and White House negotiators, would create a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for an estimated 12 million immigrants in the United States illegally.
The proposal has been derided by opponents as an amnesty program. Among the sticking points is a provision that would allow illegal immigrants who entered the country before Jan. 1 to apply for Z visas, which would enable them to live and work in the United States legally.
Critics have also charged that the bill does not do enough to secure the nation's borders.
"I understand that many Americans have concerns about immigration reform - especially about the federal government's ability to secure the border," President Bush said. "So this bill puts the enforcement tools in place first."
On June 26, to move the bill forward, 60 senators will have to vote to resume debate on the politically contentious issue.
To attract the 15 additional votes needed to advance the bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has suggested that the Democratic and Republican caucuses would each be able to put forth 12 amendments.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, speaking to Bloomberg Television on Friday, said Republican support of the proposal is waning, despite it being one of the President's top domestic priorities.
"We're beginning to see some of the people that would have ordinarily voted to proceed with the bill to say, `hey, this process is not fair, it's not transparent,''' Senator Cornyn said.
Among those Republicans who Senator Cornyn cited: Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia.

Let's place this in current context; in an environment of rampant document fraud, including, but not limited to SSN, W-2/W-4, 1099, etc, when would you rather hear from the IRS?
When they contact you (oops, 5k illegals using your SSN) regarding filing a false EIC claim, under-withholding taxes, failure to disclose income, etc. with the requisite fines, penalties, interest & threats of asset seizure?
Or would you rather have them contact you on the event of a no-match or duplicate match SSN/W-4 in the course of seeking a new job? The true "owner" of his/her identity would work to clear up their name; fraudulent users would disappear.
I mean, either way YOU are going to end up dealing with the IRS. When do you want to do it?
BTW, here's a note for all you who know that current law prohibits sharing/notification of this type of information: Bush could have easily proposed something like this as an amendment to the Patriot Act. (Actually, given national security interests, he could use the Patriot Act as justification no differently than wire-taps, etc.)
So, remember boys & girls, it really is Bush's fault!

Immigration has been my main topic. I thought that this issue was of even greater importance to the future of our nation than the so called War on Terror. I felt that the position I supported of not trusting Bush for one instance in this area was not well received here. I was even banned once for posting a article my Tim Rall about how our borders could be secured if we wanted to secure them.
I voted twice for the man, but I was very relucant the second time. No Bush will ever receive my vote again.
It seems from the tone of many of the posters here that there has been an awakening to the almost traitorous nature of Bush’s position on illegals, our borders and enforcement of the law.
I am thankful for that, but is it too late?

1. While we're engaged in the WoT, we can't afford Mexico to fall into a communist revolution and staging ground for terrorists;
2. Bush needed a growing, low inflation economy to knock down that avenue attack from the left/MSM in order to focus on the WoT;
3. The easiest way to achieve #2 was to import low skilled peasants - they kept down wages (inflation) while stimulating demand (growth).
See how easy it is? No conspiracy, no NAU, no cabal of plutocrats plotting our demise. Just stupid, short-sighted policy decisions to affect short-term boosts. Problem is, it's just like credit card debt; Bush has financed his game collateralized by OUR legacy.
