Washington, D.C. (AHN)-President George Bush called on Congress to muster the "political courage" to pass an immigration overhaul that has foundered for weeks in the U.S. Senate.
"We have an obligation to solve problems that have been piling up for decades," President Bush said in his weekly radio address. "The status quo is unacceptable."
The proposed legislation, drafted by a small group of senators and White House negotiators, would create a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for an estimated 12 million immigrants in the United States illegally.
The proposal has been derided by opponents as an amnesty program. Among the sticking points is a provision that would allow illegal immigrants who entered the country before Jan. 1 to apply for Z visas, which would enable them to live and work in the United States legally.
Critics have also charged that the bill does not do enough to secure the nation's borders.
"I understand that many Americans have concerns about immigration reform - especially about the federal government's ability to secure the border," President Bush said. "So this bill puts the enforcement tools in place first."
On June 26, to move the bill forward, 60 senators will have to vote to resume debate on the politically contentious issue.
To attract the 15 additional votes needed to advance the bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada has suggested that the Democratic and Republican caucuses would each be able to put forth 12 amendments.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, speaking to Bloomberg Television on Friday, said Republican support of the proposal is waning, despite it being one of the President's top domestic priorities.
"We're beginning to see some of the people that would have ordinarily voted to proceed with the bill to say, `hey, this process is not fair, it's not transparent,''' Senator Cornyn said.
Among those Republicans who Senator Cornyn cited: Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia.
Problem:
They get to vote for this BEFORE we get to vote against them.
I've been waiting for someone to ask them, I never hear that.
Exactly. Propaganda raids to sway the “great middle” . 50 here, a 100 there , while millions are still out there doing as they please .
Wrong - it would cost -0-. Remember the old Fram filter commercial that posed the question "Pay me now or pay me later"?
Let's place this in current context; in an environment of rampant document fraud, including, but not limited to SSN, W-2/W-4, 1099, etc, when would you rather hear from the IRS?
When they contact you (oops, 5k illegals using your SSN) regarding filing a false EIC claim, under-withholding taxes, failure to disclose income, etc. with the requisite fines, penalties, interest & threats of asset seizure?
Or would you rather have them contact you on the event of a no-match or duplicate match SSN/W-4 in the course of seeking a new job? The true "owner" of his/her identity would work to clear up their name; fraudulent users would disappear.
I mean, either way YOU are going to end up dealing with the IRS. When do you want to do it?
BTW, here's a note for all you who know that current law prohibits sharing/notification of this type of information: Bush could have easily proposed something like this as an amendment to the Patriot Act. (Actually, given national security interests, he could use the Patriot Act as justification no differently than wire-taps, etc.)
So, remember boys & girls, it really is Bush's fault!
I really have to disagree, if this were publicized correctly, you would see them running like cukaraches from the light, back to Mehico.
Check out this video, shilling!!!

Political courage would be standing up to the business lobby, world elites mass media and G.W.B.’s threat to hurt their re-election campaigns, to instead represent the people of the United States of America that voted for them.
That’s courage MR. President.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you display any. All we get from you these days are lies, name calling, and praises for Ted kennedy.
writ of mandamus
or call a constitutional convention we can fix anchor babies and term limits since congress wont do their job
I haven’t posted here in nearly two years.
Immigration has been my main topic. I thought that this issue was of even greater importance to the future of our nation than the so called War on Terror. I felt that the position I supported of not trusting Bush for one instance in this area was not well received here. I was even banned once for posting a article my Tim Rall about how our borders could be secured if we wanted to secure them.
I voted twice for the man, but I was very relucant the second time. No Bush will ever receive my vote again.
It seems from the tone of many of the posters here that there has been an awakening to the almost traitorous nature of Bush’s position on illegals, our borders and enforcement of the law.
I am thankful for that, but is it too late?
And Bastilles are for storming. When you combine the two,...
...you get renewed Liberty.
When you buy ammo, don't neglect to also stock up on pitchforks, torches, tar, feathers, rope, and fence rails.
It's been posted many times - here it is again:
1. While we're engaged in the WoT, we can't afford Mexico to fall into a communist revolution and staging ground for terrorists;
2. Bush needed a growing, low inflation economy to knock down that avenue attack from the left/MSM in order to focus on the WoT;
3. The easiest way to achieve #2 was to import low skilled peasants - they kept down wages (inflation) while stimulating demand (growth).
See how easy it is? No conspiracy, no NAU, no cabal of plutocrats plotting our demise. Just stupid, short-sighted policy decisions to affect short-term boosts. Problem is, it's just like credit card debt; Bush has financed his game collateralized by OUR legacy.
He’s really asking them to commit political suicide- I hope they can read between the lines.
maybe Tony Soprano could make him an offer he couldnt refuse..would love to see a video of that on you tube, you know tony walks to the mound and takes the baseball away from the bush league pitcher and tells him its time to hit the showers...”I’m only going to say this once, hit the showers Jorge”
I do believe you misunderstood the post. No one is saying “status quo” here. We are all wondering why the laws we have on the books already are not being enforced!
actually, quite the opposite Mr. President. It is those with COURAGE that will vote this baby DOWN the DRAIN!!!
Even more , he and Kennedy woun’t even have to live next door to a hoard of screaming , partying Mexicans .They don’t have a clue living in their Ivory Towers
I seriously see revo;ution if this bill ever passes. It’s do or die on this one folks or we can kiss the good old USA good by .
More like “political suicide” for voting for this very bad bill.
Will the Republican Senators act like lemmings and follow Bush, leaping to their political deaths? Tune in Tuesday for the cloture vote to find out! And now a few scenes from next weeks program:
Cut to: Lindsey Graham being chased by a mob with torches.
Cut to: Trent Lott seen hiding behind a tree as a young man with a pitchfork approaches him from behind.
Cut to: George Bush sitting comfortably and smirking in a tuxedo at a State dinner.
