Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

You offered, “Certainly, there are more anti-Mormon websites out there run by Orthodox Christians, for example, than anti-Orthodox Christian websites run by Mormons.”

My FRiend, your entire religion is an anti-Orthodoxy campaign. The foundational belief of your religion is that Christianity as maintained by God’s Spirit failed to maintain for more than 1500 years so your false prophet, lying adulterer, Joseph Smith was necessary for God to restore Christianity to humankind. And pointing out the heresies strengthens your religious fervor? God forgive me for aiding Satan to grasp you even tighter.

~”My FRiend, your entire religion is an anti-Orthodoxy campaign.”~

So, what you’re saying is that you feel that our very existence as a religion is an assault on the underpinnings of your faith?

If so, that can’t be too pleasant, particularly as there is no relief in sight.

~”And pointing out the heresies strengthens your religious fervor?”~

If such “heresies” are the truth, and bring me closer to Christ, which my experience has shown me to be the case, then I gladly embrace them. All I require is that you describe them accurately.

Christ made a lot of people angry with such “heresies.” I am secure in the knowledge that I am in good company.

But I will not take the crooked path just to be your friend. We can see what it is that you and your fellow apologists spend your capital promoting ... hint: it isn’t Christ, it is your system of belief in Smith as a prophet from God. It actually grieves me that you can swallow the rewrite Smith did in which he tried to create prophecy of his advent ‘in these latter days.’ But if it grieves me, think of how it pains Our Lord, especially with so many well meaning Mormons’ eternal destiny in the balance if Smithism leads them astray from His Grace!

O my, Sister, perhaps I should apologize now, before you read the further strenuous oppositions I’ve posted. This isn’t pretty posting.

Just ran across this, felt it was important to share.

Glenn Beck’s testimony of the LDS Church.

http://www.fishkite.com/2006/12/03/1632/

These are the fruits of this “evil, heretical cult.” Is Beck part of the “Mormon Campaign?” Is he a dupe, liar, fabricator, or prevaricator? Or a sincere seeker of the truth?

If this is what Mormonism can do to a man, then each of us should hope that the faith is spread far and wide.

AA delivers many from the horrors of alcoholism. It is not a religion. For every ‘righteous’ Mormon, we can cite three times that many ‘righteous’ Buddhists or Ba’hais. Again, you confuse the sources of transformation, to promote your religion rather than Christ. Are we to now paint AA as a religion worhty of ... oh, never mind. I don’t think it is registering with you. A man can enter Hell sober or drunk, it matters little to Satan.

Here’s something you better not try to misconstrue. I just finished the GB loop. I am a fan of Glenn Beck because he is so genuine, now. I actually send him e-mails occasionally (usually admonishing him to slow down and take time off to be with his family). I want you to think about something: I truly believe Mormonism is demonic inspired; if Glenn Beck has come to a relationship with Jesus Christ via Mormonism, the divided house is falling and the end of the deceiver must be close at hand and he will be playing his final cards very soon. I wonder, can you reconcile the heresies Joseph Smith promoted with the transforming power we witness in Glenn’s life? If you can do that without exonerating Joe Smith from the demonic brilliance he displayed, you have my ear, FRiend, sincerely.

I tried to put it as my tag line but it’s too long. I’ll have to leave the heresy reference there for now. Same thing in principle.

If we cannot or will not be genuine with each other in the anonymity of the Internet, what hope have we? We are not anonymous before God no matter what the medium.

Explain the twist. It’s a truism. If something is of man and not of God, it will come to naught. If the prick that you constantly kick against is of the devil, it will fall, and great will be the fall thereof. However, I see only growth, the fastest growing Church in America by most counts. I also see high profiles like Romney, Reid, Gladys Knight, Glenn Beck and others bringing the church out of obscurity and darkness.

Bear with me, but let me share some Isaiah. I see this happening all around us. Isaiah 29:

14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?
18 ¶ And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19 The meek also shall increase their Joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the terrible one is brought to naught, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of naught.
22 Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.
23 But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

KJV translates the passage incorrectly.

I almost choked on my cookie! (yes, I'm eating too late for my own good)

Are you actually defending Joseph Smith and the articles of faith? Surely you jest!

I ran into that last week, great stuff. I started listening to Glenn a few months ago, and he’s one of the more saner voices of reason out there in talk radio. Rush is old, Hannity is vicious, and both are conceited. Beck is genuine and funny. I can see why he has such a following.
