Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

You should be able to read and understand the following:

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Tell me again where 'works' are read into those verses to cause God to owe something to those who claimed to do works in His name?

~”You’ll have to point out this part, for I have missed it.”~

Sure. I’m sure you’re familiar with the account of Jesus’ baptism in Mark 1.

We can see from several verses in the New Testament that the ordinance is necessary, and commanded us by God. Here are a handful:
Mark 16:16
John 3:5
Acts 2:38

~”You must have missed the part where I asked, “WHY do we need modern revelation?””~

To clarify the ambiguities of scripture, particularly as they apply to modern circumstances unforseen by the ancients; as well as to give us God’s will and teachings in this generation.

I thought we covered this? The Nephites and Lamanites were not of the house of Judah; they were of the house of Joseph. The two didn’t even have the same mothers. Genetic connections, particularly after a few thousand years of mixing and mingling, tend to get a bit muddled.

I accept that there is no genetic proof linking the Jews and the American Indians. But that is not in the least dispositive of the Book of Mormon.

~”Those ‘groups’ have their OWN ‘prophet’.

Are they wrong?”~

Yes.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m going to go about trying my darndest to destroy their faith.

That’s fine.

So.......you are saying you don't and won't comment on stuff you've never really experienced first-hand? Man that would be a first here on FR.

Because from the post I originally replied to...you appeared to be adamant about not giving any weight at all to the poster's opinion.....as they had threatened to not vote if the choice was Romney vs. Clinton.

So...I'm just wondering if you apply the same rules to yourself?

I mean heck, you said it...I didn't. Just wondering if you are serious about that...because that would be an extremely noble and noteworthy thing. You know....someone applying the same standards that they hold others to is so rare these days.

If true, I admire you.

"modern circumstances unforseen by the ancients"

Is Holy Scripture divinely inspired or not? Can God see into the future?

"teachings in this generation."

So you want a sign, do you? Wicked generation.

~”How many of your LDS brothers and sisters think that it is by doing works that they will attain the highest level of Heaven where they will dwell in the presence of the Heavenly Father?”~

Of the ones who actually understand what the LDS Church is trying to teach them? None.

There are some, of course, that get the wrong message.

"that doesn’t mean I’m going to go about trying my darndest to destroy their faith."

St. Paul did his darnedest to destroy the "Gnostics."

1 Timothy 6:20-21

O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called "knowledge"--
which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.
Grace be with you.

~”Tell me again where ‘works’ are read into those verses to cause God to owe something to those who claimed to do works in His name?”~

Owe? You have the wrong idea, my friend. We will yet be unprofitable servants.

Really, it’s amazing to me that such a rift exists between our two positions. We both believe in Christ. We both believe in Grace. We both believe that Grace is necessary for Salvation. The only difference is that I think that Grace is contingent on our honestly striving to be obedient to the Lord’s commandments.

I don’t expect you to agree with me; but I fail to see why you see this as so incorrect. What’s the harm? It only drives me to try and be a better person. How can this be offensive?

Yes, and yes. But he usually speaks to the present.

~”So you want a sign, do you? Wicked generation.”~

Who said anything about a sign? Criminy, that’s a stretch.

So... this justifies you going about trying to destroy my faith? Gotcha.

It seems one really can justify any action from the Bible.

Clearly these Temple ordinances are not a work of feeding the poor, widows and orphans.

What is “true religion” color?

Service to others is essential if we are to realize and retain the fullness of Christ’s Atonement in our lives. Consider these words of King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon:

Mosiah 4:26

For the sake of retaining a remission of your sins from day to day, that ye may walk guiltless before God—I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants.

In addition, there are two essential components of true charity: privacy and generosity. Jesus rebuked those whose charity was given without humility, for the aggrandizement of the giver. He was saddened by those whose motives in giving were clouded by a worldly, selfish desire to receive adoration for their actions. He said:

Matthew 6:1-2

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. [Matthew 6:1–2]

Also, Jesus asks us to be generous with our giving. These simple words from a beloved hymn express it well:

Because I have been blessed by thy great love, dear Lord,

I’ll share thy love again, according to thy word.

I shall give love to those in need; I’ll show that love by word and deed:

Thus shall my thanks be thanks indeed.

[”Because I Have Been Given Much,” Hymns, 1985, no. 219]

Following are some evidences that Smith had sex with his polyandrous wives (married to other men)...

tantiboh's response?

... crickets.

Cordially,

I vote satan. Smith definitely dabbled in the occult!

What are you so worried about then? If the LDS church is not of God, nothing can come of it.

Acts 5:

38 And now I say unto you, refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
