Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

How much did Abraham give?
Show me where the tithe in the Scriptures is 30%. I refute your statement outright and challenge you to show me. Do not duck it.

Daniel,

I do not care to repost what has already
been posted by myself on this same
thread. If you do not want to put in
the effort to follow the link that was
provided for you, why should I be energetic
to repost everything???

Young man, get thee to work! A personage is
speaking to you! Be not slothful!

:-)

Mark 13

23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

Is this a false prophesy?

But it isn’t blasphemous to say the Twelve Apostles will judge?

Revelation 2:23

I will give unto EVERY ONE of you according to your works.

Romans 14:10-12

10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall ALL stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Seems there is no clause in Romans which exempts we Christians from judgment.

See the footnote on Mark 13:30.

I tell you the truth, this generation race will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

This is what your profile page says:

99% Papist, 100% Proddie.

Baptolic. †

Ok, so you say you are 99% Catholic (Papist)or do you not even know what Papist means?

I completely agree with that verse. It doesn’t say anything about being exempt from judgement for the works done while on earth.

Reno,
I rejected no challenge. And I carefully pointed to
where I believe your train of understanding went off
the track.

As to Apostles, I do not believe this was a continuing
gift to the church. I believe it was a foundational
gift for the establishment of the church... and
especially until the cannon of scripture was complete.

Again, I can hear the words of smith ville in your post -
you’ve absorbed the charges well. They aren’t true, however.

I could take your argument and point out that after young
smith’s “revelation”, he was followed by Jehovah’s witnesses
not too many years after with new “revelation”. While all
cults make some classic doctrinal errors that result in
heresy, why not go with the more recent revelation?? Hmmm?

Their stuff is much more current and cutting edge than
yours. And after their turn with “revelation”, Mary Baker
Eddy slipped on ice (true!) and had her new “revelation in
1866. Wow, wasn’t young Smith’s revelation way back in 1830
or so?? Better to go with the latest an greatest “direct
revelation” right???

Why not cut to the chase, forget about mere prophets, and
go with the “return of Christ himself!”, The Rev. Sun Myong Moon!

He has DAILY “revelation”! And it is 160+ years more
current than that old smithville stuff! And his revelation
shows he is Christ! And he obviously believes as you have
expressed, “go directly to the source for my wisdom
on these matters”. Plus you would have the advantage of
marrying with out all the courting stuff! Forget multiple
brides for one man. You can have multiple couples
marrying at once.

And so goes the slippery slope. The only remaining revelation
is which cult will arise next to restore the church and
bring us new truths.

BTW, You did not answer my questions to you about history
during the life of Joseph Smith...

best,
ampu

"Seems there is no clause in Romans which exempts we Christians from judgment."

Looks like St. Paul and St. John disagree, doesn't it?

St. John is right. Revelation was a direct communication from God to him, while much of St. Paul's stuff is his own opinion.

Revelation 20:12

"And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne..."

We will already have been resurrected, so we're not "dead."

99% Papist. Logic 101 here, DL. If I were a Catholic, that would be 100%.

Daniel, son,

You are in over your head. I didn’t claim Abraham
gave more than 10%. I said that tithing in the OT
was more than 10% - for the nation of Israel, it
was over 30%. Go learn young lad. Don’t depend on
everyone to cover your laziness time after time.
It is tiresome. “Study to show yourself approved,
a workman rightly handling the word of Truth.”

Are you changing the Bible? Why are you changing it to “race”. Should we then change every “generation” in the Bible to “race”. You are the folks charging Joseph Smith with heresy for “changing” the Bible, but you seem eager to do it.

tithe(t) n. 1. a. A tenth part of one's annual income contributed voluntarily or due as a tax, especially for the support of the clergy or church. b. The institution or obligation of paying tithes. 2. A tax or assessment of one tenth. 3. a. A tenth part. b. A very small part. The word itself means "a tenth part" Word History: A tithe is a tenth, etymologically speaking; in fact, tithe is the old ordinal numeral in English. Sound changes in the prehistory of English are responsible for its looking so different from the word ten. Tithe goes back to a prehistoric West Germanic form *tehuntha-, formed from the cardinal numeral *tehun, "ten," and the same ordinal suffix that survives in Modern English as -th. The n disappeared before the th in the West Germanic dialect area that gave rise to English, and eventually yielded the Old English form tothe, "tenth," still not too different from the cardinal numeral ten. But over time, as the former became tithe and the latter ten, and as tithe developed the specialized meaning "a tenth part paid as a tax," it grew harder to perceive a relationship between the two. The result was that speakers of English created a new word for the ordinal, tenth, built with the cardinal numeral ten on the pattern of the other

The word itself means a tenth part.

The practice of ending your posts with an awkward attempt at solemnity does not justify your words. You can save the blah, blah, blah.

How would I know there are some who are 5 point calvinist
or 4 point.

So not all are 100% of their faith!

Are you a 4 point Calvinist?

It is a wonder your head doesn’t explode. You have so much unprocessed trash floating around in there from sources designed to distort confuse and lie to you, that you are a walking talking garbage dump. If you can find anything at Mormon.org or LDS.org that comes close to the spew you are attempting to sell we might be able to have what is called a discussion, but you are as the Scribes and Pharisees, ears to hear and eyes to see, but deaf dumb and blind. Have a great day.

And let me say in closing that this goes for all the rest of the Saturday Mormon Bashing crowd, just so ampu doesn’t feel picked on. I would find it so refreshing to read something positive and uplifting on one of these threads, but that seems to be outside the realm of those whose minds are so full of clutter. I venture to say that not one thing against any Christian or non Christian religion has been said by any LDS on any of these threads, but that doesn’t seem to register either.

"Are you changing the Bible?"

I'm not changing anything. Look at the footnote.

"Should we then change every “generation” in the Bible to “race”."

You can consider that alternate translation when the footnote exists, yes. It's not often there though.
