Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

Pick any Christian Church, it matters not to me.

Do so and I'll see you in Paradise.

I just don’t understand why the concept of the “Trinity” is essential to their salvation or to my not being called a Christian if I do not believe in it. I believe in the Father, and in the Son, and in the Holy Ghost, as you illustrated.

No dice, LDS isn’t a Christian Church.

You forgot to ping me when you ascribed motive to me. If I were the Religion Moderator, I would reprimand you, but I’m not.

The specific instructions of the Religious section say you are not to ascribe motive to another poster and your statement clearly does:

“I understand why C.C. & a couple others fight. They’re akin to the Zoramites or the Nephite disenters, so I understand where they’re coming from & what motivates them.”

So give me a list of what you consider a Christian church.

Remember also that scripture itself comes from God, it is God breathed. Pray, certainly, for understanding when you read it. But understand that God’s word is also a gift apart from the Holy Spirit’s action on you, it was also a gift through the prophet who the Holy Spirit guided. To understand the Bible you must read it in full and harmonize the verses. Some things will be beyond you, and will remain a mystery, since God’s ways are higher than our own.

I think the problem comes here for the Mormon. They cannot rely on thier own understanding (see Psalm 3) and they cannot rely on Mormon understanding since the Mormon scriptures are false. So they are ultimately lost when interpreting the Bible and when trying to work their way to salvation.

Truly brother, underwear and tithes do not get you into heaven. I know that you think your religion handles this and I am being silly or twisting things to say that this is what you believe. I am not. If it is not important to salvation, stop tithing and take off the garments, and see the reaction of your church and see what you have been taught to believe. God bless you and may the true God pull you to him.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The Lord Jesus Christ calls it His Church. Who are you to say otherwise?

You ask, "Then tell me what belief of yours I need to subscribe to in order to be called a Christian." and you ask that two posts after you condescendingly asserted, "No matter, it just illustrates for everyone else how vapid your positions are." In your present condescending smugness, I don't suspect you can get there (to be a Christian) from your present self-aggandized state. If you can get over your self-righteousness for a few minutes, perhaps God can reach you. It is after all up to Him, not your blood, sweat, or condescension. Hear what Jesus says you must do to receive eternal life, not what I or any other poster asserts, least of all what a false prophet, adulterous liar who sought to rewrite the Bible in order to insert false prophecies of himself so sincere people like you would stumble over his heresies.

Sorry C.C. I’m still kind of new to this thing & getting the hang of it. No malice intended. I’ll try to remember the Ping thing next time.

"So give me a list of what you consider a Christian church."

Now you want me to nitpick the differences between all the denominations. Forget it.

It amuses me that you are using a dialogue that took place 2000 years ago and trying to apply it today.

That dog don’t hunt!

I have studied the events in Joseph Smith Life and the timeline that accounts for his time.

Sorry not buying your sour grapes!

Your platitudes are meaningless. Show me the scriptures that say God is unknowable or that his mysteries are unsearchable.
Again...
Matt. 13: 11
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Luke 8: 10
10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand
I do not care for your telling me I cannot know my God when he says I can. Who are you? If you want to be the old wine skin Jesus spoke of that bursts when new doctrine is poured into it, go ahead. I will not follow you in your madness.

Not in my Bible He doesn't.

That is because His Church was restored after the Bible was written and because the Bible is not all the word of God. If it were, no man could receive revelation. Furthermore, you cannot show me in the Bible where it says that is all God has revealed or will reveal. Again, just flat ignorant.

A Christian.

A Christian denying the word of Christ. How telling.

You will say that I am not Christian because I do not hold your set of beliefs and then endlessly harp on it. However, you will not give me the same courtesy you are showing to the other faiths you disagree with and have differing points of doctrine with but still refer to as “Christians”. That inconsistency is the common thread to all of your posts.

Proverbs 3:

5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Isaiah 55:9 As the heavens are higher than earth, so are my ways higher than your ways ...

Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

But you know all mysteries? Is this a Mormon teaching?
