“Mitt Romney supports the strict enforcement of gun laws. He is a supporter of the federal assault weapons ban. Mitt also believes in the rights of those who hunt to responsibly own and use firearms.”

—Romney campaign statement
Deseret News, Sept. 1, 2002

This statement shows that Romney supports the assault weapons ban. But even more troubling is that he doesn’t understand the Second Amendment. It’s not about hunting. It’s about the people’s right to protect themselves from their own government.

Now, compare that to the essay Fred wrote not long ago about the VT massacre and how allowing concealed carry on the campus could have made a difference.

When it comes to the 2nd Amendment as guaranteeing a right to self-defense, Fred gets it.

That is flat out false. He understands very well that the 2A is about more than just hunting.

On the 31st anniversary of the Gun Owner's Action League, Governor Romney declared May 7, 2005 as "The Right to Bear Arms Day" in Massachusetts to honor "the right of decent, law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms in defense of their families, persons, and property and for all lawful purposes, including the common defense."

The firearms reform bill signed by Governor Romney in 2004 had the endorsement of the NRA, Gun Owners' Action League, law enforcement and Massachusetts gun owners. The bill added several measures these groups favored, including a lengthening of the terms of firearm identification cards and licenses to carry.

Mitt stood his ground the best he could with a 85% liberal legislature.

You might wanna check this thread before you go too far with this AWB thing:

The NRA analyzed the legislation and said what they said about Mass. Those quotes don’t override the legislation. Your attempts to distort the facts are futile.
