“Passage of the legislation would give 12 million undocumented immigrants a chance at legal status while handing President George W. Bush a victory on his top domestic priority”

My proposed Amendment: Children born to people illegally in this country are not citizens of the US. Retroactive to 1986.

Look, people. Forget anchor baby issues.

That is an item explicitly in the US Constitution. Undoing it requires an amendment to the US Constitution which requires super majorities in both houses of Congress and ratification by a super majority of state legislatures.

It is not going to happen, and it most definitely is not going to happen this week. So forget it. It is a matter that would require over 10 years to pass all necessary state houses, at least half of which would probably vote no.

Just put that aside. It is in the Constitution explicitly and any such law would last 24 hrs before a lawsuit challenging it gets filed and the law gets thrown out by the courts as clearly unconstitutional.

Why are they worried? Lott says they will just rewrite the bill in the Dem-controlled senate-house conference!
