Cameron Diaz's bag with Maoist slogan raises ire (70,000 dead Peruvians resent Commie purse)

AGUAS CALIENTES, Peru - Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion faux pas in Peru. The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated "Shrek" films may have inadvertently offended Peruvians who suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring here Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong's favorite political slogans.

While explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru's Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words "Serve the People" printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao's most famous political slogan.

While the bags are marketed as trendy fashion accessories in some world capitals, the phrase has particular resonance in Peru, where the Maoist Shining Path insurgency brought Peru to edge of chaos in the 1980s and early 1990s with a campaign of massacres, assassinations and bombings.

Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the insurgency.

A prominent Peruvian human rights activist said the star of "There's Something About Mary" should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories.

"It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims," said Pablo Rojas about the bag's slogan. "I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology" did so much damage.

Yeah forget the bag, how about those legs.

It really is ironic that someone came up with a way to make money off these communist images and phrases. The guy who made millions off it must be laughing as trendy airheads buy them up.

“Nationalize” Hollywood and the media? Sounds rather communist to me...

Hollywood is one of the few things that America can export, drug companies and technology companies being the other two major ones, so I wouldn’t be so quick to condemn it.

Put this in perspective, Cameron is an actress and a dumb blonde who has no idea what the bag meant and how offensive it was. It is like a muslim coming to USA and wearnig a t-shirt that makes a joke out of the 9-11 attacks with a phrase from Bin Laden.

Fortunately Communism is down for the count. It failed and bankrupted nations. Some of the most capitalist places in the world is now China and Russia where billionaires are made and Boeing sells 787 dreamliners. Cameron is a millionaire actress who can make millions just doing the voice of animated character...nobody is espousing communism.

She’s paying the price for her stupid bag purchase, over 100 articles in the international press have mentioned it. It shows the lack of sensitivity to the poor who have suffered terribly under communism by wealthy Americans and Europeans who think it is “cool” to wear Che t-shirts. Cameron should go visit the Victims of Communism memorial.

“Does she not understand AMERICA IS AT WAR?”

Because “America” is not at war, the Soldiers and Marines of our country are at war....America is at the mall.

So Mao sayings have gone commercial? It's like Rolling Stones songs being used for car commercials.

If nothing else, let's hope the bag was made in China.

I got a guy who works for me who had a Che belt buckle...he’s young....history major and strong as a buck

I asked him if he really knew about Ernesto beyond the hype

I told him Che was a spoiled sociopath who given rein woulda killed probably millions and was not hesitant about mass murder or concentration camps to further his goals....told him to go read up.

He did.

Quit wearing the buckle... at least around me..lol

worse than Che was the Ho t-shirt I saw near Vandy when Kerry was in town two years ago....I complained and left the restaurant.

It took a lot for me to resist smacking that asshat. 57,000 young men just a few years my senior at the time died fighting that collectivist...how dare he be celebrated here

i wanted to ask the guy....why not wear a Hitler or Stalin shirt?

This is being reported in the MSM - must have been some “ire”. It’s good to see that the good people of Peru know who their enemy is.

You think that’s Communist? Have a read of the measures Churchill put in place in the months following the fall of France. “Their Finest Hour” — recommended reading. (Volume II of his six-volume history of WW-II)

Churchill would have nationalized Hollywood in the blink of an eye.

If it’s not helping your war effort (and it’s not) then it is of dubious advantage at best.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she offered to make up for the offense by obliging all the men in the region. That would be a day’s work for Cameron.
