Excerpts -
HONOLULU (AP) - The US military intercepted a mid-range target missile in a test off Hawaii today.~ snip ~
It hit the mid-range target's simulated warhead 100 miles above the Earth.
The target separated mid-flight, meaning the interceptor missile had to distinguish between the warhead and booster rocket for the kill.
The test marked the first time a Navy destroyer intercepted a target missile.
Previously only Navy cruisers had done so.

Evil America.
How dare she defend herself from others that wish her destruction!
Those destroyers could be anywhere in the world; only thing that would be sweeter would be able to intercept from a sub. Not that I think this is beyond the abilities at the moment, but having a sub launch the intercept would send chills down anyone’s back - you could block any medium range missile anywhere in the world, and no one would know where your platforms were.
It shouldn’t be long before the Russians call this purely defensive weapon a “threat to world peace” and the successful testing of it a “provocative act.”
....that will assuredly "lead to another Cold War."
Good...I hope we get enough to prevent wacko Iran from firing upon allies.
Kim Jong Il is deeply saddened.
Pretty cool, eh?
Ya know, the Russians are playing power games with us regarding missle defense. Contrary to popular opinion, the Russians still have enought nuke-tipped missles to kill the planet many times over. Putin's oversized ego and his political standing is what makes him whine so loudly.
There is NO threat to Russia. He knows that. These defensive anti-missle defenses are for the rogue nations. He just wants to be a player on the International stage. MAD is still in effect with Russia.
How much prep time does a sub need to fire a missile? It’s certainly doable.
How many of them can actually fly?
This is the technology the Clintons tried so hard to stop.
GRRRREAT news! Thanks for posting.
IIRC, That was the centerpiece of Tom Clancy’s “The Bear and the Dragon..an Aegis cruiser intercepts a PRC missile over Washington..
You bet, the Russians absolutely hate missile defense. They did everything they possibly could to get Ronald Reagan to negotiate away development of missile defense systems, and I’m sure they’re pounding the State Dept. on it right now. Thank God Reagan wasn’t the wuss that Jimmy Carter was and is.
