WASHINGTON, June 22, 2007 Afghan and coalition forces killed several enemy fighters yesterday during operations in Afghanistan, military officials reported. First, the troops engaged and killed several enemy fighters on a ridgeline near the village of Horax in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province. Three hours later, enemy forces made contact with the same combined Afghan and coalition patrol near the village. More enemy fighters were killed in the ensuing firefight, officials said.
Elsewhere in the Shah Wali Kot district, enemy fighters in pickup trucks and motorcycles ambushed a combined Afghan and coalition patrol near the village of Syalrzamin. The combined forces engaged the attackers, killing a number of fighters and destroying two motorcycles.
No civilians were hurt in any of the three engagements, officials said.
Taliban fighters are no match for Afghan national security and coalition forces, said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. We will intensify our operations to rid Afghanistan of all Taliban fighters who harm innocent Afghan civilians and threaten the government of Afghanistan.
