Senators Cornyn and Hutchison Take a Stand on Immigration Bill (Will vote against cloture)
WAI ^ | Jun 22, 2007

...Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has long called for an immigration overhaul, saying the current situation is deeply flawed. And as the Senate minority leader, McConnell is central to shepherding legislation the president wants...But in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday, McConnell said he would not decide how to vote on the measure until a long series of amendments are disposed of next week.

....Also on Thursday, Texas' two Republican senators, John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison, said they would vote against bringing the bill back to the Senate floor.

Hutchison, the No. 4 Republican, said the measure includes "amnesty provisions" for illegal immigrants.

If I am reading this right, now both Cornyn and Hutchison are on the record as not voting for cloture. Hutchison's phones must have undergone meltdown. By my count, that leaves 11 still undecided on cloture, including Burr. But McConnell still seems to be committed to 'voting for cloture. Back to the phone.

I feel like they are just going to keep hammering away until they have greased enough palms in backroom deals to get this to the floor for a vote.
Congress is really selling the American people out. They know this but still see more advantage to gaining all those new taxpayers than in keeping us happy.

Help stop this. Make some phone calls. We only have to change 11 minds at this point. There will be two big votes: the cloture vote, in which 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture and bring the bill to the floor, and the final vote approving the bill, which only requires a simple majority of 50 for it to pass. These people need to be leaned on to vote against cloture, first and foremost, because their “no” vote will count for less when only a majority is needed to pass the bill. I believe the Dems have the votes to pass the bill on the final vote. DEMAND THAT THEY VOTE AGAINST CLOTURE.

General Capitol Phone line, live receptionist who can direct calls:
202-224-3121

*Good News - Can’t even get through to McConnell as the line is constantly busy. Trent Lott isn’t even answering anymore - Got a full vm message. Called Cornyn to express support and got his vm.
The phones are ringing off the hook in DC!

Glad to have helped. Now people from other states have to get on the stick. I can call any senator from any state, but I can't see them paying much attention to a non-constituent.

Concentrate on those up for election next year - tell them you'll vote for, contribute to and volunteer for any primary opponent who is against this bill.

Here is a list of key Republican Senate contacts for EVERYONE to email regarding immigration. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries! Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senate office mailbox. Contact their Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and Press Secretary. Make your voice heard!!

>>There will be two big votes: the cloture vote, in which 60 votes are needed to invoke cloture and bring the bill to the floor, and the final vote approving the bill, which only requires a simple majority of 50 for it to pass.<<

I wish it was that simple. KBH's website says she will oppose cloture on S. 1348, but I think Kennedy and Reid are planning to push S. 1369, the other amnesty bill. They may try to pass one, and if that fails, (perhaps hoping that we will stop calling senators) bring up the other bill. They are really hell-bent to pass a bad bill. Instead of using their experience and abilities to do something worthwhile, they are trying to "accomplish something," never mind the "consent of the governed."

Your state representatives don’t have a vote on this, only the senators. Call both your senators and then call some of the ones on these lists.

“I think Kennedy and Reid are planning to push S. 1369...” All the more reason to vote against cloture. Once cloture is invoked, and the bill is on the floor, they can move to substitue 1369 for 1348. So if we can keep the bill from coming to the floor by getting enough of them to vote against cloture, it won’t matter which bill they want to push.

I don’t know why they couldn’t have separate votes for the two bills, but maybe you know more about it than I do.

We need all the NO votes we can get on both bills.

The cloture vote is the key.

A few senators may think they can vote “yes” on cloture and then vote “no” on the amnesty bill. That would be a fake no, however, because there are enough votes to pass it without them.

The cloture vote is the crucial vote. Anybody who votes for cloture needs to be voted out of office at the next election, regardless of how they vote on the bill itself.
