New LEDs offer simple replacement of fluorescent tubes

June 22, 2007 With over half a billion fluorescent light globes disposed of each year in the U.S. alone, there is no doubting the significance of a product that allows existing fluorescent fixtures to be converted to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) by simply changing the bulb. The world's first true replacement of glass fluorescent lighting tubes, the EverLED TR from LEDdynamics utilizes the existing fluorescent ballast, while achieving the equivalent light output of the tube it replaces.

In addition to energy savings, the benefits of LED lighting technology include a 10 year service life, high quality light, and cold temperature operation. Made of recyclable materials, the EverLED TR does not contain mercury or lead and has no glass to break and is the first commercially available product which facilitates conversion to LED technology without replacing or altering the existing light fixture.

The EverLED TR is a 48" long T8 replacement, available now in 5 standard shades of white, from daylight to warm white. The 48-inch "S" model provides the equivalent light output of a 40 watt tube while consuming only 25 watts. 24", 60", and 72" models will be available in Q3, 2007.

The EverLED TR incorporates patent pending electronic circuitry which allows the LEDs to extract power from existing fluorescent ballasts regardless of the technology used by the ballast. This technique also allows the reduction of power needed to create light and increases the compatibility of the unit with fixtures using T12, T10, or T8 diameter fluorescent tubes.

"The United States alone disposes of 620 million fluorescent tubes each year," said Bill McGrath, President of LEDdynamics. "Many of these are not disposed of properly, exposing people and the environment to toxic and hazardous materials. Before the development of the EverLED TR, there were simply no better choices. Now, anyone can convert their legacy fluorescent system and realize the benefits of clean, safe, and quality LED light".

It’s clear that any technology that manages to use existing infrastructure to bring energy efficiency benefits is important in a world grappling with climate change.

So, all this BS about banning incandescent and fluorescent light bulls is unnecessary. The market has built a better bulb that lasts for years, gives off little heat, has no hazardous materials in it, is difficult to break and uses a fraction of the energy. No new laws required. Funny how that works.

But LEDs contain arsenic and gallium! We can’t have that in our landfills where children may eat it! /s

Did you see a price on this?

No, but most LEDs are quite expensive. However, if they outlast your conventional bulb by a factor of 10-20 years, then in the long run, you’re saving money.

About $150.00 a bulb - on their website.

Exactly. Let the market run its course.

CFLs (and soon LEDs) make sense because they cost less to operate. But I’m not going to put an ugly CFL where I have a decorative bulb, nor will I use a CFL as an oven light, a refrigerator light or a porch light.

A ban on incandescent bulbs is idiotic.

I’ll be very happy to replace my kitchen fluorescent bulbs with these LEDs just as soon as my fluorescents go out. It’s just that they never do. I haven’t had to change a bulb in years.

If your children are eating at the dump, you probably have bigger problems than arsenic and gallium poisoning. ;-)

I am curious about the color spectrum of the new LED lights. If I remember correctly, they have the same problems as some CFL’s do - a harsh, bluish light.

Good to see that they FINALLY have the lumen output up to the fluorescent equivalents, but I haven’t seen any LEDs yet that are able to match a simple 75-100W incandescent with the same size factor.

Yeah, it's become the way that enviros close their prayers. Climate Change or Global Warming is their savior, so everything they do is in its name.

Two words: How much?

I have been following LED technology since the white ones were developed, hoping the price would go down enough to make them practical. Flashlights with LED arrays are the only ones to buy now, and are affordable. Incandescent lights waste so much electricity, with roughly 90 percent of the energy being output as heat and 10 percent as light.

Whoever can develop an affordable LED device that can screw into a standard fixture will change the world. So far they are insanely expensive.

Oh the irony that they have developed something to replace the florecent bulbs, which are already the most efficient and economical.

Oh, I see someone looked up the price while I was typing. I can't imagine spending $150 on a lightbulb and only gaining an environental benefit. That is just not enough to motivate people to cough up big cash, while the florescent tubes are so cheap they are practically free by comparision.

What is interesting about this new technology is that these tubes are able to use existing circuitry, and maybe that is a breakthrough for additional applications.

Climate change is involved in all things. Last night while watching the History Channel show “Mega Movers” they threw a completely senseless comment about climate change into a theoretical question about moving the Queen Elizabeth 2 overland.

Basically they asked how the QE2 could be moved overland if the sea levels rise due to global warming? In a world with higher sea levels why the hell would they need to move a ship overland?

Personally it sounded like little more than a means of inserting the words “Global warming” into our consciousness.

OLEDs are the next step. http://www.universaldisplay.com/white.htm "PHOLED technology and materials present the potential to combine the power efficiencies of fluorescent tubes with the pleasing color quality associated with incandescent bulbs in a thoroughly new flat form factor. In collaboration with Toyota Industries Corporation, at the 2004 Society for Information Display Symposium and Exhibition, we reported record-breaking white PHOLED performance exceeding 18 lm/W at an operating voltage of < 6.5 V, brightness of 1000 cd/m2 and CIE color coordinates of (0.38, 0.38). Universal Display Corporation is developing a variety of white light emitting device architectures that offer a range of spectral coverage, color temperature and efficiency profiles. Certain device designs also offer the ability to tune dynamically the white spectral characteristics of the device. This means that a room occupant could change the room lighting from a cool to a warm white as desired. The development of FOLED technology has generated tremendous excitement for the possibility of thin, flexible OLED lighting panels. Imagine installing OLED lights, as though they were wallpaper, where and when you want them. The integration of TOLED technology with these lighting approaches offers the opportunity to create “smart windows” that provide multiple functionality – sunshine during the day and lighting at night."

But shouldn't we be encouraging families to eat meals together, at home?

The lights look cool though.
