The Bush administration is nearing a decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and move terror suspects from there to military prisons on U.S. soil.
According to the Associated Press, President George W. Bush's top national security and legal advisers are expected to discuss the move at the White House on Friday and it appears a consensus is developing for the first time among Bush's inner circle.
They will consider a new proposal to shut the highly controversial prison, built at a US military enclave on the southern tip of Cuba, and transfer nearly 400 detainees to one or more U.S. Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations.
Officials familiar with the agenda of Friday's meeting said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff, National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Peter Pace and Vice President Dick Cheney are likely to attend.
It was not immediately clear whether the meeting will result in a final recommendation on Guantanamo to President Bush..
The Iraqis had one thing right. Killing the lawyers defending Saddam.
We are going to lose the war.
This is going to be a long war.
I am afraid we are still just in the opening skirmishes...
And, we are NOT going to lose.
Never.
He’s saying Clinton was right; these are crimes, but not acts of war against the US. There it’s not a “War on Terror”, it’s a “police action”.
Bush is as awful as his daddy.
What the h*ll happened to this guy?
They have no protection under any laws, national or international.
domestic jihad bump
Let’s hope the idea is stopped dead in its track...
It’s a sad day in American when we cave in to political correctness. The terrorists are laughing their asses off right now.
The ‘rats are correct, W is mentally challenged.
You probably make a decent point.
Do you know if they are still transferring prisoners to Guantanamo or are most of the terrorist inmates from the early days of the Afghanistan campaign?
That was rather silly...
But, I see cooler heads prevailed and it was moved back to news.
Someone put it into breaking news. For the record, that was not me. Still warrants being a news story though.
I was looking through tomorrows British papers, and it was the Telegraph’s front page story.
Cheers.
Note to overseas troops
Might as well come home, this President and Congress is not serious about anything. Don’t risk your life anymore.
This is The Telegraph. They always do some "administration is divided - Condi fights Cheney fights Gates/Rumsfeld fights Bush fights CIA fights ..." stories to sour "the faithful" on administration. First 20 posts on FR usually jump on headline and take it as done deal and God's truth... Nothing happens but bad feelings stay, especially after 6 or 7 years of such stories and, especially now, when nerves are raw because of suicidal shamnesty.
Gates is possibly suggesting it, as part of "implementing" a Baker's ISG report, or it's simply as a high level pow-wow to have a defense strategy against Congress on why Gitmo isn't going to be closed "as Baker's ISG proposed"...
In other words, not bloody likely!
Put them in with general population, I think a few guys would help solve our terrorist problem.
Hmm. Given the advanced age of Castro and the potential chaos when he dies, there might be some reason to shuffle a few cards.
Who comes up with these rumors? I heard on Fox news the Bush administration denying them.
Pay No Attention To The Freeper Behind The Curtain. I Gave You An Order.
And they will be put on trial.
On trial for what? They haven't done anything illegal.
They are enemy soldiers, captured out of uniform carrying out acts contrary to the laws and usages of war.
Kill 'em all.
