BOSTON -- Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry said Wednesday that the wife of a missing soldier in Iraq should not have to worry about being deported because she doesn't have a green card.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the federal government said it has no plans to deport the wife of Army Spc. Alex Jimenez despite the fact that Yderlin Jimenez entered the country illegally in 2001.
Alex Jimenez has been missing for more than a month after his unit was ambushed. The Lawrence soldier's wife is in the U.S. illegally. I don't think that's the way you say thank you to the wife of an American serviceman who is now missing in action and whose whereabouts is unknown," Kerry said. "I think it's not the way to say to anybody, 'We are grateful for your service to our country, particularly if you may have given your live.' There is something rough about it and inappropriate and indecent. I think most Americans would say, 'Whoa. What are we doing here? She deserves some peace of mind.'"
"It's a difficult situation for his wife to go through all this. I mean, it brings out the two critical issues in this nation -- immigration and the conflict," family friend Wendy Luzon said.
Since her husband's disappearance Yderlin Jimenez has been with relatives in Pennsylvania. Her friends said that the marriage should give her the right to stay in the country.
"It seems shocking. A lot of people have been calling my office like they do on a daily basis to see any updates, but today, people are really shocked to see the outcome of what is going on and the bad timing of it," Veterans Affairs Officer Francisco Urena said.
Feels like a leftist is behind this to change our hearts and minds.
Agree 100%
Kerry can blow me but I think we can make sure this soldier’s wife has nothing to worry about.
Current law should allow her to immigrate legally. I’m not sure what happens (legally) if her husband dies prior to her completing the paperwork - but I think she should be entitled to legalization of status.
In this case, if this woman is given protection, Kerry will be a hero of the left, and he will lead the calls for OTHER exceptions having nothing to do with military families.
Amnesty is perfectly justified in this case, IMHO. Just the right thing to do for a man who is fighting for his country.
Immediate family of military personnel honorably in service to this country should be granted an immediate visa or wavier of visa requirement. Their soldier, sailor, marine or airman has earned it for them.
Agree
Should not a citizen be able to bring a foreign wife home, legally? (or visa versa) Kerry is a law maker.
She has nothing to worry about, other than her soldiers where abouts!
Wonder if Spc. Jimenez knew that she was illegal. If, and I hope, he does come back then he might be in a bit of trouble if he knew.
Prayer for the MIAs.
I agree. That soldier’s wife has already paid a much higher price for citizenship than most native born Americans could ever imagine.
The door of his Water Street apartment is adorned with a poster quoting from the Bible. One of the quotes describes a man who is blessed because he follows the laws of God:
"For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish." |
Lots of responses in a short time; the vast majority of them being 100% supportive. And yet, opponents of this sell-out vampire bill are repeatedly called bigots, xenphobes, and other such choice words.
I'm disagreeing here. Call me a purist or whatever, but I'm disagreeing. Military service shouldn't beget such a pass.
yes , there is a visa for it. but you come in legally. The wife came in illegally.
But as soon as she married a soldier, as far as I am concerned, she is legal.
Give her a waiver.
If the government has no plans to deport her .. especially since she is MARRIED to an American ... then why in the hell is Kerry making an issue about this???
She should be allowed to an extention until her husband is either returned or found.
She probably has already recieved this, and J F’ing Kerry is trying to score cheap worthless political points, knowing media won’t dig deep enough to figure it out. Kerry probably saw the memo or heard the case mentioned and figured he’d use it to blow up his sagging image.
