Yeah, I had to ask myself how I would have responded if Nancy Pelosi had gone (assuming the London Policy Exchange would have invited her, but that is another matter). I honestly would have scoffed. But I agree, if he tells them this stuff, without the empty sloganeering of most candidates, then I’m game.

I heard Hewitt’s criticisms. He went on and on about Thompson’s delivery, although he liked his substance. He has a point, but I’ll take substance over delivery any day. Voters’ propensity to look for substance also helped our current president get to the office he holds today.

It’s not a problem that he goes...it’s all dependent on what he says and does while he’s there.

Fred will be a great President.

According to one of his aides, I think from when he was in the Senate, he tends to write his own speeches. Now, that may change when he starts campaigning, simply because of the time involved, but I suspect even if he hires a speechwriter, he will have final say over what actually gets said. And if he does hire someone, I’m sure they will be professional enough to write in his manner of speaking, so no one would even be able to tell the difference.

I thought HH's criticism was pure nit-picking designed to push his used car salesman of a candidate.

I'll accept a few honest bobbles as compared to the slicky-packaged dodges Romney regularly spews.

I would wager it’s all him. For a fact his quote of Churchill is dear to him because he has referred to it before.

As for other history he references it is consistent with his writings that reference American history which are strictly due to him.

He could have written this speech on the plane over.

He is a very good writer and thinker. After reading his legal briefs, I would never underestimate his abilities.

Ditto your comments. I selected that quote to comment on for the same reasons. He knows that the hearts and minds of the people must be engaged and won. I believe he is the man to do that - publicly and privately.

"For our part, we in the United States must make a better case for our views and our actions. It is possible that things that are perfectly obvious to us may not be so obvious even to those who wish us well. We must be willing to listen and we must be willing to share our intelligence to the maximum extent appropriate."

"We must be prepared to make our case not just privately, but to the people of Europe and the world in order to build political support for cooperation. The world is not stronger if America is weaker - or is perceived to be weaker. The same is true of Britain and truer still of our NATO alliance. And we must be capable of making that case."

"In return, it is fair to expect that our allies will not put their trade and commercial interests above world security. It is also fair to ask that Europeans consider the consequences if they are wrong about the threat to the Western world."

because he had a lot of "uh's" and "um's".

I agree with HH on that one, though I think Fred did well despite this.....still he needs to dump the uh's and um's, it is poor technique....not as bad as "ya know" but still annoying.

Is that how we judge a man... by how many uh's and um's he says in a question and answer period.

What a terribly shallow standard Hugh Hewitt has set.

If that is the case, and it becomes the standard, then Bill Clinton is the fairest of them all because the man was exceedingly glib and terribly fast on his feet.

Excellent speech! I usually like to highlight what stands out to me in my post, but I’d have to copy the whole thing.

The more I hear Fred, the more I think he should be the next POTUS. He, as they say, “gets it”!

His Q&A was slightly worrisome. He probably needs some prep before he gets into the debates.

Cheers.
