PHILADELPHIA It looks like the U.S. Mint has struck again or not struck again, depending on how you look at it. New dollar coins featuring John Adams are missing edge inscriptions including "In God We Trust," according to the Professional Coin Grading Service, a rare coin authentication company based in Newport Beach, Calif.
The company said people have found hundreds of Adams dollar coins without the edge lettering, repeating a previous mistake. In March, an unknown number of George Washington dollar coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint without "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum," and the year and mint mark inscribed on the edge.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Mint said the agency is looking into the reports.
After the Washington "godless dollars" were discovered, the Mint pledged to more closely monitor the striking process.
But a Detroit collector received smooth-edged Adams dollars in sealed containers from the Philadelphia Mint. There also are reports of the opposite problem Adams coins with edge lettering that has been double-struck, said Ron Guth, president of the Professional Coin Grading Service.
"It's too early to put a final price tag on the collector value of Adams presidential dollar errors because no one knows how many others will turn up," Guth said in a news release.
The Adams dollars, officially released into circulation May 17, are the second in a series of presidential coins slated to run until 2016.

I wonde what would be the chances of getting one or some of these by going to a bank? Zero?
I have a large and valuable coin collection. PCGS is one of the best 3rd party coin grading services (great thing to do to make coins more easily “liquified” into paper money). I might think of getting a roll or two, but be careful people- prices early on may be higher because of assumed rarity. They MAY come down big time before a generally accepted value is known.
I’d sure like to get my hands on a few. By the time I retire, they’d be worth some serious ching.

Why does the US keep making dollar coins?? Imperfect or not, I have been given just one in change since they came out. I declined and asked for a paper dollar. This is just stupid. Three strikes and you’re out (I hope).

First it's gold and now this.
When will I learn and just take my money out of the market...
No. The closer to Phiiy though, the better, I assume. Also, MOST people don’t get rolls of dollar coins from the bank (if they did, Susan B Anthonys would be everywhere). After the state quarters though, which caused people to collect them in extremely high numbers, I found a silver quarter in change a few months ago. First time in decades.
Just work for your retirement and your retirement will be guaranteed with prudence.
In 20 years, the rare ones are going to be the ones that mention God.
I’m on my way down that road already (max contributions to IRA and 401k), but more is never a bad thing.
Good question. I can only surmise that it might cut down on counterfeiting of a $1, but more likely a result of a vending machine union lobbyists. /s
I’ve been around the block enough to be cynical about this, yes.
a press operator and an inventory clerk who probably receives pre-printed shipping labels from the business office could pull it off quite easily and under the radar..........all while the QC dummy was on break or taking a crap!
I just wanted to make sure that I was understanding you correctly. And I totally agree. Freakish things bring all of the rain.

In a roll of Montana quarters, I got a complete blank—it went through the entire process without a mark on either side.
These new dollar coins are garbage-they remind me of the coin giveaways in the late 1960s from Sunoco—the aluminum Presidential series.
We need to get Reagan on the quarter after the statehood series ends in 2008.
God doesn’t need money.
