COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, a former real estate developer who became a rising political star after his election last year, was indicted Tuesday on federal cocaine charges.

Ravenel is also the state chairman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.

Ravenel has stepped down from his volunteer responsibilities with the campaign, according to a statement released by Mark Campbell, Giuliani's political director.

Campbell said the campaign has no information about the accusations pending against Ravenel.

The millionaire is accused of buying less than 500 grams of the drug to share with other people in late 2005, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said.

Ravenel, 44, is charged with distribution of cocaine, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Hell of a day for old Rudy. Nussle leaving the campaign for the BD job, Ravenel gets busted for cocaine and Fred Thompson pulls ahead in the first poll of many to come.

Giuliani will be an afterthought before the leaves turn.

Who was the Homeland Security guy he boosted to Pres Bush?

Bernard Kerik (who was promoted from Giuliani's personal bodyguard and limo driver to New York City Police Commissioner).

When his DHS nomination fell through (it turned out that, in addition to not being remotely qualified, Kerik employed illegals (like Linda Chavez), was under investigation for tax evasion, and it came to light that Kerik took control of an apartment donated for the recovery efforts at Ground Zero, using it as a rent-free "love nest" to meet with his whores), it was Rudy who boosted Chertoff ("people against shamnesty are Mexican-lynching racists who hate freeeeeeeedumb").

Fruity Giuliani - America's manager.

What’s this have to do with Rudy????

You have to be high on something to support Rudy.

Moral of the story: Rudy will drive you to drugs. :)

Or doing drugs will drive you to supporting Rudy. :-)

Just don’t get in their way of slamming Rudy. If you do, they’ll slam YOU, too.

That’s what I was thinking about too. This guy was touted in some conservative circles as a probable alternative to Lindsey Grah-amnesty.

“...how in heavens name could he let something like this slip through when picking a state chairman, volunteer or not?????”

Two words - Bernie Kerik
