>> As far as I know, there were not even whispers of anything untoward regarding Ravenel. Anyone could have some sort of dirty laundry hidden away, but until and if it comes out, it's not possible to know about it. That's why you never 'marry' a polician, because you'll never really know. <<

Untrue. Rumors that Ravenel has illegal drug issues had swirled for years, but there never any concrete proof. I distinctly remember that were three posters that referenced cocaine on the "Draft Ravenel for Senate 2008" petition. This was monthes ago. I'd be happy to post then but of course, the petition got removed. If you can back through the posts, you'll discover a few monthes that FieldMarshaldj was touting Ravenel and freepers were ranting that Graham is homosexual, I mentioned that locals in South Carolina had concern that Ravenel was a druggie. In both cases, there was no "proof", but that didn't stop them from listing Graham as a matter-of-fact homo. Ravenel's cocaine rumors, though was simply ignored by the Lynch Lindsey crowd, of course.

Besides, the fact Ravenel was pimping for Rooty, of all candidates, in South Carolina, should have raised red flags. The fact that ANY South Carolinian is promoting an abortion-loving, gun-grabbing drag queen in the primaries is bad news was apparent to everyone but the hard core Lindsey Graham haters. What kind of honest conservative wants to "replace" a McCain yes-man with a Rudy yes-man? The guy was Rudy's S.C. campaign manger. Would you support a "true conservative" in the primary who turned out to be the current Public Relations Manager for Jim Jeffords? Of course not. It's obvious to everyone but them that being hitched to Rudy is 10X worse than being hitched to McCain. All they care about is that Ravenel professed to do their bidding on every issue and was popular enough to "win" a contested primary.

If you showed them a video of Ravenel attending a Satanic church and killing kittens, they'd probably still support the guy as long as he professed to agree with them on every issue and could "beat Graham". THAT was their focus, not whether their candidate had integrity or morals.

Billy, why do you keep dancing around the central point that your boy is the biggest booster of criminal shamnesty in the Senate ? All the rest is irrelevent.

Here are some links refutting the idea that Ravenel had a clean boy scout image and this drug bust came totally out of the blue and “shocked” his fan base in SC:

Writing from Charleston, I can state that even when Ravenel previously ran for office, that he had had drug problems in the 1980s was known.
http://bookwormroom.wordpress.com/2007/06/19/credit-to-a-media-outlet-where-credit-is-due/

Ravenel, a millionaire real estate developer, had been arrested in 2005 on the drug charge but it could not be made to stick at that time for lack of corroborating witnesses.

Now Adam Temple is taking shots at his former boss,Senator Jim DeMint, for taking Ravenel’s endorsement in the 2004 Republican Primary. It should be noted that the endorsement occurred over one year before Ravenel got heavily involved with drugs according to the indictment. Ravenel certianly had recently been rumored to be abusing cocaine and alcohol.

There have been rumors of Ravenel being a coke-head for many, many years. The suprising thing is that he was stupid enough to get caught

In short, the South Carolina Republicans knew it was a possiblity their “true conservative” was a cokehead. They didn’t care. As long as his name wasn’t “Lindsey Graham”, they were willing to risk that possiblity and bank on the rumors being false.

Bad move.

Fieldmarshaldj, why do you keep dancing arond the point that you personally want to give a Senator who led the fight to enact McCain-Feingold and happily voted for amnesty to one million CRIMINAL Nicaraguans illegal aliens in 1997 a PROMOTION to leader of the free world?

I never suggested amnesty is good and we should we give Senators who vote for amnesty a promotion to president. I have never said Graham's support of amnesty is good and he should be rewarded for it. The ONLY one who is touting the idea of rewarding a senator who is pro-amnesty is YOU.

I won't play games with your blantant hyopcrisy. Either being pro-amnesty is treasonous or not. PICK ONE.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND AND WE'LL TALK.

>> I know he was state chairman, it’s not going to derail the campaign. Dream on. <<

This one incident won't do much to his NATIONAL campaign in the long-run, but anyone who doesn't think this doesn't have a major effect on his STATE campaign in South Carolina is kidding themselves. Three points:

1) Rudy was an incredibly hard-sell in South Carolina to begin with, as he is a pro-abortion, pro-gay, gun-grabbing candidate trying to win the Republican nomination in a state dominated with super social conservatives. Having Ravenel as his state campaign manager was the one lifeboat he had to stay afloat, as the Ravenel family is a big name is South Carolina and having the so-called "true conservative" Ravenel vouch for Rudy had given him crediblity. Now that the real Ravenel has been exposed, Rudy must find another SC Republican willing to back someone with his "values". He will most likely end up with a third-rate little known Republuican. Any replacement Rudy can find for state party chair won't have nearly the type of gravitas. What little chance Rudy had of winning the SC primary is gone.

2) With Ravenel gone from the picture, any chance the Graham haters had of finding a first-tier challenger for Graham is also gone. Why do you think they were pressing so hard for a Rudybot with questionable morals to run even AFTER he had ruled it out? He was the one credible "100% pure" statewide official they had. Unless hell freezes over and Mark Sanford runs for the Senate, any Graham challenger next year will be 2nd rate as best. Notice on this thread, they're now gunning for Karen "I'm the only Republican who failed to get elected statewide in South Carolina" Floyd as the next best choice. Obviously the #2 choice is quite a step down from the gravitas of no. #1. 'Nuff said.

3) With Ravenel's ugly truth coming out, Sanford will be sure to appoint an intermin treasuer who is squeaky clean, and probably a mainstream Republican who won't rock any boats by running off to cast his lot with Rudy. So ironically, all the anti-Graham freepers who said their goal was to get rid of someone who was "an embarrassment" for South Carolina have gotten their wish -- except it's the exact opposite of the candidate they intended!

Billy, I’m sorry you’re being intellectually dishonest here. I don’t think we can discuss this subject anymore.

Rumors that Ravenel has illegal drug issues had swirled for years

I'm from a neighboring state and follow politics quite closely, and I'd never heard a thing, and had never seen any such FReeper comment in any Ravenel-related thread until the Draft Ravenel comments you pointed out, which were fairly recent.

Anyway, your love for Little Lindsay borders on the homoerotic. You go in some very strange places in your manic desire to paint everyone but yourself as hypocrites. I don't dislike LG as much as some, but I'd sure like to see him replaced with a conservative. As for Fred, I think most people (not all, of course) realize that he is not perfect, but he inspires a great deal of excitement because of the dramatic contrast between he and Rudy McRomney, each of whom many FReepers would refuse to vote for entirely.

Help me out here. I’ve been scouring the Internet trying to find just ONE report dated BEFORE Ravenel’s indictment of this rumor that now everyone claims to have known about.

Can’t find one. Please provide a link... if you can.
