U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole and five other GOP senators wrote President Bush today that federal policies are encouraging illegal immigration. The senators, led by Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, also submitted a resolution in the U.S. Senate calling on the federal government to make a host of changes on immigration policies, among them:
ending the policy of returning captured migrants at the border into Mexico without prosecution; enforcing the prohibition of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants; increasing by thousands the numbers of detention beds, Border Patrol agents and immigration investigators by the end of the fiscal year; building 700 miles of fence along the border; increasing the use of expedited removal proceedings for illegal immigrants and enforcing the provisions on overstayed visas.
A joint resolution was submitted in the U.S. House of Representatives as well.
"Such enforcement measures can be taken now, without enacting additional legislation," the senators wrote to Bush.
Dole, a Republican from Salisbury, also released a statement, saying, "The federal government's failure to carry out the immigration laws on the books sends the message that this country is not really serious about securing our borders and communities and stemming the flow of illegal aliens. We don't need more empty promises - we need real proof that our borders are secure and that our laws are enforced."
Steady the course ladies and gentlemen - its going to get rough.
“building 700 miles of fence along the border”
NO, we need to build a massive wall 1,951 miles along the ENTIRE border! It needs to be completely modern with landmines, sensors, radar, machine guns, helicopters, the US Army, and barbed wire.
Happy to see this. But for me, Richard Burr, in sharp contrast to Liddy Dole, is just screwed, blued, and tattooed.
“ending the policy of returning captured migrants at the border into Mexico without prosecution;”
YES!
Let ‘em stay with Sherrif Arpaio for 6 or 8 months, and charge ‘em for room and board and the ride to the border when their sentence is served.
And pit bulls. Don’t forget the puppies!
That statement places the responsibility right where it belongs- with the Executive Branch.
When I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I thought Liddy would be a terrible Senator. She’s turned out to be pretty good.
Damn. I never though I’d see the day she took a controversial position.
Bob Dole says, "the Viagra is working wonders..."
Yes, she sure has done well, especially when compared to some of the arrogant, hig profile RINO’s that get the headlines.
She has done much more for NC and the country than Shillery has for NY but you would never know it from the national press.
Maybe the wrong Dole ran for the presidency.
Me either. And she's damn right on this.
However
Call me cynical, but she's up for re-election in 2008.
Elizabeth Dole has really surprised me here. I always figured she’d end up a limp-wristed RINO, but she’s proving to be far from it.
I never cared for her, but did vote for her in 2002. She has always had good ACU ratings if I recall correctly.
To clarify, her opponent was Erskine Bowles. Ugh.
In most cases they never finger print are take a DNA test, but if one claims to be sick they get all the free medical we can pay for.
Ah, the old "tell'em what they wanna hear trick".
Hooray Elizabeth Dole and Jeff Sessions!
All true, but there are a lot of other Senators up for ‘08 re-election pushing this immigration bill like it’s cocaine.
Precisely. It’s almost as if she called it in on her shoe phone.
“Let em stay with Sherrif Arpaio for 6 or 8 months, and charge em for room and board and the ride to the border when their sentence is served.”
Absolutely, and the baloney sandwiches and pink skivvies add a nice touch to their stay at Uncle Joe’s Hotel.
