There is a syndrome of that across the country.
My wife and I know several so called conservatives after retirement coming out of the closet and sounding like life long liberals.
We wonder if they lived a lie for decades and were too embarassed to admit that they were liberals. When they retired, they drop all pretentions of being conservative.
Or just moles reaping the finances and jump in when they are needed to pull a Ross Perot.
A cynical mindset? Maybe.
A possibility? Definitely.

The working people who pay the taxes that run the Government are the conservative slaves.
The dependents are the takers from the Government. This includes the retirees on social security as well as govt workers, students, welfare and EITC / low income dependents, etc.
Some people start getting liberal when they go from the role of giver to role of taker.
We have a dangerous situation in this country. Thanks to Reagan and Bush tax cuts more than half the families in the coutnry pay little or no income tax, while thanks to various welfare state expansions, especially in health care, more than half of families have a dependent on govt.
This is the heart of the conservative/GOP vs liberal/Democrat split - dependency.
