Bloomberg no longer a Republican

Associated Press

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg left the Republican Party on Tuesday and switched to unaffiliated, a move certain to be seen as a prelude to an independent presidential bid that would upend the 2008 race.

The billionaire former CEO, who was a lifelong Democrat before he switched to the Republican Party in 2001 for his first mayoral run, said the change in his voter registration does not mean he is running for president.

"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city," Bloomberg said.

The 65-year-old mayor has increasingly been the subject of speculation that he will run as an independent in 2008, despite his repeated promises to leave politics after the end of his term in 2009. He has fueled the buzz with increasing out-of-state travel, a greater focus on national issues and repeated criticism of the partisan politics that dominate Washington.

This is a breaking news update. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

I was referring to the non politicians, who we know, who turn liberal when they retire.

Obviously not teachers and other governement workers. We actually know two couples, who were teachers and principals and are very conservative since they retired.

Yes, he only ran on the R ticket because he couldn’t get the D nomination.

I will include myself, since I was born and raised in California!

If you recall, Democrats were running Andrew Cuomo (Bill Clinton's HUD Secretary) and Carl McCall. Seeing this, Bloomberg ran as a Republican instead. When the Clinton's ultimately endorsed McCall (an African-American), Cuomo dropped out and McCall lost to Bloomberg.

Not quite. You're mixing up the 2001 NYC mayoral race and the 2002 governor's race.

Bloomberg bought the GOP nom because every Dem in the NYC area was vying for that slot -- Freddy Ferrer, Mark Green, as well as maybe half a dozen other forgettable political hacks.

Well, there are some Dems who don’t like Hillary.

I have been counting the ‘08 bumperstickers I’ve seen on L.A. roads. I’m up to 4 so far: 3 were for Obama and one for, unbelievably enough, McCain!

Bloomberg no longer a Republican

I almost posted, he never was, but considering the state of the Republican party these days, he's been doing fine as a Republican, and he actually never claimed to be a conservative.

True, but those “puss pockets” are where the major population resides. California is a good example of what would happen to the entire U.S. if Hillary gets her way and does away with the Electoral College system, going to a popular vote election. Your “puss pockets” equate to the blue states!

We actually know two couples, who were teachers and principals and are very conservative since they retired.

Before they retired, politics was their business and livelihood via the unions.

Is it any wonder that they turned conservative when going on their own via retirement?

Yep! And those central planners keep herding more and more into the allotted space,
while designating huge land masses as off-limits to us commoners.

I am not sure West Coast Dems know him that well.

That's his secret weapon. Outside of the Northeast, nobody knows squat about the guy. He might even be associated with 9/11 in some people's minds.

If he stuffs a billion dollars into this, he'll be able to define himself as anything he wants to. It will take a massive effort on the part of the Republican nominee to make sure that real Republicans know that he's an idiot.

I just hope somebody's got some great dirt on him for October, 2008. Maybe it'll even be Hillary who takes him down.
