Honey, I Wrecked the Porsche

Call it a metaphor for a prosperous, risk-embracing age or just call it bad driving.

Auto makers are turning out a new breed of supremely fast sports cars that sell for upwards of $250,000 and share many characteristics of purebred racecars. But as more of them hit the road, often in the hands of inexperienced drivers, a growing number are ending up wrapped around trees, smashed into guardrails or otherwise totaled in accidents.

In the past 18 months, drivers across the world have cracked up at least six rare $1 million Ferrari Enzos -- only 400 of which were built. In March, a California man rammed his $300,000 Lamborghini Murcielago into five parked cars; while in England, a 39-year-old driver caused an international stir among car enthusiasts by crashing a Bugatti Veyron -- an extremely rare $1.5 million turbocharged missile with a top speed of 253 miles per hour.

It's not just drunken celebrities doing the damage. On the way to an M.B.A. class near San Diego one recent morning, Nasar Aboubakare, a 40-year-old private-equity firm president, lost control of his new 550-horsepower Ford GT and wrenched it over a lane divider. "The car is like a wild animal," he says.

Never mind all that. Where are the deep pockets?

There’s a Lamborghini dealer near where I work...so we see them around here fairly often. I saw a guy goose it and just about lose it as the ass went all squirelly.

This also reminds me of that girl last Halloween that popped her skull like a zit between Toll Booth and the Porsche after she careened across several lanes of traffic after clipping someone else.

I, as a fan of high-performance vehicles of all sorts, hate to say it, but most of these vehicles are absolutely pointless on the street. Most of them have limits that are way beyond the average owner’s abilities to push, even on a racetrack. Even so, if I had the money I’d have a garage full of them.

I also like motorcycles, and what IS a little scary is that any nimrod who can scrape together $12,000 (or so), or financing for it, can go out and buy a nice new litre-class sportbike, or for a few bucks more an open-class bike like a Suzuki Hayabusa or Kawasaki ZX-14. 180 HP, 750 lbs bike and rider combo, how man HP/lb does that work out to? .24, quite a bit more than that new Ferrari mentioned in the article. That kind of power can get a careless rider way in over their head, way quick. In fact, the only place you can exploit them to their fullest is on a racetrack, and even then a lot of experience is required.

If you have money to burn, I suppose wrecking a car that costs as much as my condo is no big deal. Most of us consider our car our most important investment after our home and take care of it accordingly.

When I was a valet in Newport Beach, CA I watched a guy sidestep the clutch of his new lambo and go backwards into a wall. Myself and another valet say him put the stick into "first gear" on your typical car (not italian sports cars) rev it and slide off. WHAM! right back into the wall.

Reverse is where 1st is on some of the lambos and 1st is where 2nd should be.

MY knees buckled when he did it.

I was reading about the latest Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 in Motor Trend 7/07....top speed 209 mph.

They tested one in Dubai....150 to be built, and they arent even going on sale, all pre-sold.

If Adnan wants to kill himself driving like an idiot, it’s fine with me. I object to his endangering my family by doing so on the public roads.

Exactly...so we should have horsepower limits in place right? No one should have a car that has any more than say about 40 horsepower and 5 forward gears.

nah. these people should just learn how to drive.

Better. Now hear me out. This thing is probably Crazy-fast. But it looks like a MBZ SL roadster. When are they going to go off the hook with a redesign?

Well then how about renting some time at a racetrack? 200mph on freeways is more than slightly irresponsible.

Or take it to Germany for a trip on the Autobaun. If you can afford the car, you should be able to afford to ship it over there for your 200mph vacation.

Bill Cosby spoke about 200mph. I hear his Shelby Cobra scared him so much; he parked it.

BTW: The History Channel had a show on the Autobaun last weekend. They had a Porsche with a two man camera crew crammed into it. They were doing 212MPH... at night!

Sweet road though. 27inches of rod bed; meticulously maintained, less than a 7% grade change, and long sweeping turns (long straight lines lull you to sleep). And a drivers license requires personal training, and the license itself is about $1500 dollars. Tailgating can bring a $20K fine. Yep, you read that correctly. 20 thousand dollar fine for tailgating!

Adnan K. Mehmood ....says he has driven his 2006 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster faster than 191 mph a number of times on freeways. "I want to go to 200 mph," Mr. Mehmood says.

Well then how about renting some time at a racetrack? 200mph on freeways is more than slightly irresponsible.

Exactly. Take it to the track, attend some track driving schools and track events and learn how to actually drive that Lamborghini the way it was meant to be driven. The regional chapters of the Porsche and BMW car clubs put on some excellent events, for example. If you can afford a Lambo, you can afford to take it to the track.

Certainly beats taking that expensive, beautiful piece of automotive art onto a freeway, flooring the gas pedal, endangering every other driver out there, and wrecking the car like a complete tool.
