Republican campaign strategists and independent election analysts say that after five months of contentious House Democratic rule, the Republican Party's once-bleak congressional prospects for 2008 have markedly improved.
The Democratic Congress' job approval score is now worse than President Bush's, plummeting to 23 percent, a drop of eight points since April. House Democrats have been forced to retreat in the face of a furious assault by Republicans on pork-barrel spending, an issue that hurt the Republican Party in November. And Republican recruiting has produced plenty of candidates eyeing weak Democratic freshmen in Republican-leaning districts that swept them into office last year.
"Republican recruiting seems to be progressing at a reasonable pace. GOP strategists have about half a dozen seats that they know the party should never have lost ... and eight of the nine most vulnerable House seats currently are held by Democrats," elections analyst Stu Rothenberg wrote last week in his Political Report newsletter.
Strategists at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) confirm that a larger than expected number of House seats are now being targeted by the NRCC and that a surprisingly larger-than-expected number of seasoned candidates from state legislatures and other elective offices are coming forward to challenge Democrats who took over Republican districts.
"A lot of Republican candidates are seeing an opportunity for higher office for the first time in a while. They've been waiting in the wings with a lot of pent-up ambitions, hoping that a Republican incumbent was going to retire, and now see that it's held by a Democrat," said NRCC press secretary Ken Spain.
"These candidates are smart and realize that 2006 was a wave election and it's highly unlikely that Democrats will get back-to-back cycles like that in a row," he said.

Dont worry the republicrats will blow whatever possible gains they would otherwise get from these dismal rat numbers.
Yup, and the President and Congressional GOP leadership are leading the charge for full and total defeat.
Exhibit A: the Immigration Shamnesty Bill.
They are working hard to lose in the next week.
The American people are completely befuddled as to what they want in a government.
2006 was over-analyzed with a lot of blame pointed in several directions, but the truth is that '06 was a presidential second term "mid-term" election where losses are historic for the party in power. It wasn't a fluke or an historical anomily.
If we can prevent illegals and dead people from voting Democrat then Republicans might have a chance...
“Democrats, Republicans - maybe a dime’s bit of difference”
- Larry Elder, “The Ten Things You Can’t Say In America”
I’m just ready to clean house. I’d prefer republican but I’ll take anyone but an incumbent.
I have NO CONFIDENCE in incumbents that are running. I believed in our government until the immigration debacle. I agree that we SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE TO WAR WITH THE BACK DOOR LEFT OPEN.
Your children and my children are going to pay for this, hopefully not with their life. Terrorist would just as soon come in an open back door looking for a place to hide instead of getting shot in either war.
They said they were going to bring it to America, I believed them and wanted the war over there, Bush and Congress are the ones that did not have an issue with the radical muslim forces otherwise they themselves would have closed the door, built the fence and secured the borders BEFORE they went to war.
I will say that the republican party is in trouble because of the FENCE. They need to stop talking about immigration, enforce laws on the books and build the fence. Otherwise lets clean house and start over.
You won’t...
Voter Fraud has become an accepted Democrat Institution now, and Democrats realize that they MUST make Hispanics into Welfare Plantation Slaves, or face eventual extinction by the laws of Demographics...
And they are selling out the Blacks to do it.
I would love for people to just wake up and realize this is not democrats or republicans. It is us, we fight among ourselves instead of ignoring the rubbish and looking at what is best for our country.
We shouldn’t do anything else until we have secure borders. Bring our troops home, or leave them there, either way we are screwed because of open borders. Start another war with IRAN or not, we’re screwed because of open borders.
Unfortunately Ron Paul was right, WE are responsible.
It’s not fair to equate Bush and the “congressional” GOP leadership. The Senate GOP leadership ain’t much. But the House GOP leadership is pretty decent. They’ve done a good job against the Rats in this Congress.
Personally, I find this article pretty encouraging.
“they look so alike these days.”
Bunk. You haven’t been paying enough attention.
On immigration, the only people opposing the amnesty bill are Republicans. Half of the Republican party (in the Senate) is better than none. In addition, if this POS ever gets to the House, only a small minority of Republicans will vote for it.
"I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth."
- - Revelations 3:14, The New American Bible, Saint Joseph Edition
(By the way, the literal translation is actually "vomit", not "spit".)
I’ve not been too impressed with Boehner, and that goes back to January where he just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights when Evita Pelosi did her schtick at the rostrum. He just seems like he’s asleep at the wheel. I think we’re going to need a serious leadership cleansing ASAP. As for the Senate... McConnell and Lott ought to be sacked immediately for dereliction of duties.
