WINNING PERFORMANCE

Britain's Got Talent: Paul Potts wins!
Sunday 17th June

Opera singer Paul Potts has won the final of Britain's Got Talent, after wowing the judges and public with his singing voice.

The mobile phone salesman, from Port Talbot beat competition from five other acts to take the title at the end of the nine-day series.

He wins £100,000 as well as the chance to sing for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance on December 3.

Potts sailed through the competition after singing Nessun Dorma, which he also sang in the final.

Other acts who took part in the final included puppeteer Damon Scott, dance troupe Kombat Breakers and six-year-old singer Connie Talbot

"I can't think of anybody that I would rather see represent this show in front of her Majesty The Queen than Paul Potts," Piers Morgan said after the result was announced.

"I'm so proud of you," said Simon Cowell, revealing that Paul would be in the recording studio making his debut album next week.

Potts, meanwhile, said he was "speechless".

Over two million votes were cast by the public, with a percentage of the money raised from phone calls going to charity.

So let’s see.

If I buy a $20,000 bass boat, does that make me a professional bass fisherman?

If I take tennis lessons from Andre Agassi for a year, does that make me a professional tennis player?

Now according to Mr. Potts, he paid his own way for all of his training and was never paid for any of the performances that he participated in.

Yes, he did seek out and received professional training for the passion of his life, but that does not make him a professional. He may very well have been able to make singing his profession, but along the way life intervened and prevented him from realizing his dream, which is not that uncommon.

What we are seeing in the person of Paul Potts, is the real life equivelant of Roy Hobbs. He is a person who was bestowed a special gift and before he was able to realize the fruition of that gift, events beyond his control overtook his life and doomed him to a mundane existence(hey, this is beginning to sound like my life). With this talent competition, Paul got one more chance to reclaim the life that he so dearly wanted to live. Believe me, stepping onto the stage for his audition was the equivelant of the rookies league for Mr. Potts. Just imagine for a minute how much pride he had to swallow and what a chance he took. The humiliation would have been eternal if he had faltered in anyway.

No, Paul was exactly the type of contestant that the sponsors of the competition were looking for. Bemoan the fact that he received professional training. Anyone who has ever hired a coach or paid for lessons has had professional training. I am willing to bet that most of the contestants that entered this competition have had some sort of professional training. And before you toss Connie into this mix, she was probably the only true amatuer in the entire competition. I am willing to bet that she will have more coaches than she will know what to do with over the next 10 - 15 years.

This will get lots of people interested in opera.

Waving hand in air here. Was never an opera fan. Have lost count of the times I have watched the Paul videos. Have been all over YouTube watching Pavarotti, Domingo and some of the others.

Yes Paul has had some training but really it was very little. He will only get better. Congrats to Paul.

That has to be the stupidest thing that I can’t stop laughing at since I saw my first episode of Benny Hill.

Thanks for the offer. I may call on you if you enjoy sticking it to Hillary. This is rudimentary, but people will get the point. http://youtube.com/watch?v=UtW9Ptcmm-8

So, he's been professional trained and he has been singing professionally for some time.

.....working for the phone company

youd think a pro would at least earn a living wage from his expertise

I am completely thrilled over Paul’s success. Look what happens to a man who is true to his own dreams! Only in a free country can such a thing come true.

DFU, Paul will be making his US debut on the Today Show this Thursday. The YouTube videos have all come out of Britain.

Do you know if anyone will be capturing this performance? There's such a good catalog of his singing on YouTube now, it would be a shame if this one wasn't added.

I don’t know who will capture it but I’m sure someone will have it on YouTube.

So far, no one has posted the interview or the live performance. Do you know anyone with the capability to do this? I have the links if that’s any help.

Hey, I’ve paid a small fortune for voice training, and have sung twice in recital for Barbara Dever of the Metropolitan Opera. (In case you don’t who she is, she’s sung professionally with Pavarotti and Domingo, and works regularly with Zubin Mehta. She’s a true world-class talent, and said I had a golden glow!)

Training and working in opera is extremely expensive. It is essentially a rich person’s art. Most of the up and coming talent are beautiful, rich, and privileged young people who can afford to fly from city to city on auditions, and spend summers paying to perform in workshops in Europe’s many small opera companies. Lessons are expensive (mine are $120 per hour, and most people pay more for big name teachers — twice a week.)

And forget about recording if you’re a serious opera talent. The studios no longer pay to hire orchestras to back you up and they certainly do not pour the capital into recordings that have little chance of selling in the millions. Years ago, such recordings were very common. No more.

The exceptions are humble, gifted people like Potts who scrape by, sacrifice, and build whatever career they can purely on work and merit.

Potts participated in the show precisely on its own terms — finding undiscovered talent and making them into stars.

God bless that wonderful man and his wife. I wish him a long and prosperous career.

Thanks. I’ve got the links. I don’t know how to record them into a free-standing (for lack of a better term) video and I’m looking for advice.

I did it once but don’t remember how. Go to keepvid.com. You then need to download a flv player from that site.
