Jefferson Memorial's Signs of Sinking Raise Fresh Alarms

Up on the surface, the signs of the trouble at the Jefferson Memorial are small:

A few blacktop patches over uneven seams in some concrete. A cordoned-off section where the sea wall has slipped below the front plaza. The "tilt meter" boxes that visitors can't see unless they know where to look.

Underground, though, the problems may be huge: Slowly, almost imperceptibly, parts of the complex seem to be sinking into the mud.

It's probably not endangering the majestic 32,000-ton domed structure itself, although it's being monitored for movement.

The big problem seems to be a section of the sea wall that is breaking from the memorial's plaza and settling into the Tidal Basin. The "ring road" along the memorial's circumference also seems to be shifting, officials say.

Somewhat ironic since the Republic that Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers gave us seems to be sinking too.

Homeowners in the Potomac drainage basin (the Tidewater portion) have had similar problems when their seawalls failed. (Many years ago, I worked on a seawall crew--quite a bit downriver from D.C.)

I guess if they want it to stop, they will have to build a wall.

Funny how that applies...

Why fix the monument? The redemopublicrats have destroyed the country that Jefferson and his colleagues gave us. I think the sinking memorial is apt.

Additionally, I propose that we attach generators to the spinning corpses of our founding fathers so that our nation can finally achieve energy independence.

Global Warming is CAUSED by the spinning of our founding fathers in their graves. Would that we could stop that and solve all our problems.

Its probably sinking because some knucklehead has tunneled in from Mexico and gone right under the foundation.

Yes. Just another sign that our Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves, looking down at the treasonous pols who inhabit the Capitol.
